Pennsylvania doctor stabbed to death, wife wounded as trespasser claiming to be God attacked couple while they slept
A Pennsylvania doctor was stabbed to death as he slept by a near-naked intruder claiming to be God as his critically injured wife rushed to save their children and find help.
Dr. Idris Evans and his wife were found suffering from multiple stab wounds inside their home in Edgewood, Penn., just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Allegheny County Police said.
The couple had been sleeping in their third-floor bedroom when suspect Elijah Hemingway, 32, allegedly broke into the home from a back window and launched his overnight attack.
“It was a very violent scene. The bedroom furniture broken, mirrors broken. It was a very graphic scene,” Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph told reporters during a news conference Thursday.
Hemingway was described as “psychotic” while he stabbed the doctor and his wife, making multiple references to God and “being God,” according to court records obtained by WPXI.
Evans, 46, was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His wife was also transported to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
Evans’ wife told police they had tried “fighting back the best of their ability” while she yelled for their kids to flee the home.
The couple’s children, 8 and 12 years old, were reported to be physically “OK” from the attack.
The alleged intruder also took Evans’ wife’s car keys after he demanded them.
During the attack, Evans called out the suspect by his first name, “Elijah,” as if he knew him, according to his wife, who did not know the armed intruder, Joseph said.

Hemingway claimed to have been invited to the home, but officials found evidence to back the claim, the outlet reported.
“We do not know if there was any preexisting relationship, though the female victim did not know this male, we are trying to determine if the two males knew eachother, it at all,” Joseph said.
Hemingway was tracked down by a police K9 to a neighboring home where he was found with lacerations to his hands, officials said.
The suspected killer was transported to a hospital and hit with a slew of charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass, officials said.
Hemingway had been out on a nonmonetary bail following a July arrest for burglary and theft back in February, according to court records viewed by The Post.
Evans was a physician and the co-Medical Director of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Pediatric Transport Team as well as an Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, according to his online bio.
“The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh,” UPMC said in a statement to WPXI.
Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected.”
