Mamdani to meet with Trump at NYC’s Gracie Mansion this week

Mayor Zohran Mamdani will welcome President Trump to Gracie Mansion on Monday when the commander in chief visits the Big Apple for the United Nations General Assembly.

Hizzoner and Trump, who have been famously chummy despite their diametrically opposite political views, last met in-person back in February, but have remained phone pals ever since.

“The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

The get-together will mark the first known instance of Mamdani inviting Trump to the iconic Gracie Mansion residence on the Upper East Side. 

The mayor has tried to seize on Trump’s roots as a Queens native to build a constructive relationship with the Trump administration, despite campaigning on a vow to be the president’s “worst nightmare.”

Just after Mamdani’s election victory last year, Hizzoner met with Trump in the Oval Office and was greeted with a surprisingly warm reception despite the president’s fierce criticism and accusations of him being a communist. 

Republicans had sought to turn Mamdani into a boogeyman for the 2026 midterms before Trump became wowed by him.

“We have one thing in common. We want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” Trump declared during their meeting last November.

At one point, Mamdani was pressed about his past insults blasting Trump as a “fascist” and a “despot.” 

“That’s OK, you can just say yes,” Trump quipped in response. “I’ve been called much worse than a despot, so it’s not that insulting.”

In the time since their remarkable lovefest in the White House, Trump has continued to extol Mamdani even as the two men have had fierce disagreements on policy. Back in January, for example, Mamdani slammed Trump’s decision to order a raid capturing Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro.

“You know, I met him, he came to the Oval Office, and we’ve had some nice conversations and very good. And then he hit me a little bit on the tremendous victory — and you would say it was a tremendous victory — on Venezuela,” Trump vented to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt at the time.

But later, Trump added: “He’s got a great personality.”

The two New Yorkers also butted heads over Mamdani’s campaign pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he set foot on US soil for UNGA, which is taking place this month. Hizzoner pointed to the International Criminal Court arrest warrant for Netanyahu. 

Trump scoffed at that, insisting it wouldn’t happen. Mamdani has begrudgingly since acknowledged that he, as a mayor, lacks the authority to arrest a foreign leader like Netanyahu. 

Trump is scheduled to speak to the UN on Tuesday while Netanyahu is set to deliver his address on Thursday.

“When it comes to the president, we continue to have a conversation about how best to deliver for this city,” Mamdani told reporters last week when asked about a potential meeting with Trump. 

“That is a conversation that has been done in person, it’s been done over the phone, and it will continue so long as either of us has the ability to deliver for the city.”

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

During his visit to the Big Apple for UNGA, Trump is also expected to meet with a number of world leaders to discuss the conflict in the Middle East and other pressing matters. Then, he will jet back to DC for a high-stakes meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday. 

Xi hasn’t set foot on US soil since 2023 and hasn’t been to the White House since 2015. Trump visited China back in May.
