First deaths from ‘explosive diarrhea’ parasite outbreak reported in Michigan — as cases top 11,000
The first deaths from the cyclosporiasis “explosive diarrhea” outbreak have been reported after two Michigan residents died after contracting the food-borne illness.
Both patients, who are yet to be identified, had “significant underlying health conditions,” the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The Food and Drug Administration believes the outbreak came from tainted iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, which was served at Taco Bell and served in stores.
Between May 1 and July 27, at least 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were recorded, with Michigan the most affected state.
Authorities in the Wolverine State say they have counted more than 11,200 suspected cases as of Aug. 3, although these have not been lab-confirmed.

As of July 30, 193 Michiganders have been hospitalized.
