Lindsay Clancy trial live updates: Patrick Clancy, father of their 3 murdered kids, takes the stand as 1st witness

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother and labor and delivery nurse who fatally strangled her three young children in 2023, began Monday in Plymouth.

Eighteen jurors heard harrowing opening arguments before Clancy’s ex-husband and the children’s father, Patrick Clancy, took the stand as the first of 200 witnesses expected to testify.

Lawyers for Lindsay Clancy, 35, have argued she is not criminally responsible for killing Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and extreme mental illness when she killed them and then tried to take her own life, leaving her paralyzed.

Patrick Clancy divorced Lindsay after the murders, remarried and has a new baby, but has staunchly defended her, saying in a 2024 interview. “I wasn’t married to a monster. I was married to someone who got sick.”

Patrick Clancy painfully looks down when asked to point out killer ex-wife

By
Georgia Worrell

Patrick Clancy painfully looked down after the prosecutor asked him to point out his ex-wife and what she was wearing after he took the witness stand Monday.

“She’s wearing a pink shirt,” Patrick said while blinking rapidly, and weakly pointing to Lindsay.

The prosecutor then asked Patrick a series of questions about the former couple’s early days, after they were introduced by his cousin, who was Lindsay’s college roommate, in south Boston in May 2013.

They started dating a few months later, in July, before moving in together in September 2015.

They tied the knot in December 2016, and had their first child, Cora, on Dec. 24, 2017, before buying the fateful Duxbury home in July 2018, Patrick recalled.

Lindsay Clancy was ‘controlling’ — and only tried to commit suicide to escape responsibility: prosecutor

By
Georgia Worrell

Lindsay Clancy was “controlling” and only attempted to kill herself in order to escape responsibility for her children’s murders, the prosecutor told jurors during opening statements Monday.

Clancy “was someone who liked to control every little detail of her life, of her family’s life,” prosecutor Shanan Buckingham said.

Although the defense, friends and family will try to paint the former nurse as a great mother who was overcome by postpartum psychosis, Buckingham promised the jury: “You’ll also see a side of Lindsay Clancy that’s very controlling, meticulous and manipulative.

“The days were laid out with specificity — strict schedules were expected to be maintained,” as well as rigorous restrictions around food and sleep, the attorney said.

“This is not a public debate about women’s mental health and how the medical system treats women. This case is about this defendant, Lindsay Clancy, who made a “calculated decision,” Buckingham said.

“She was coldly efficient when she executed them.”

Court on recess after dramatic opening arguments conclude — Patrick Clancy set to take the stand next

By
Georgia Worrell

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington insisted that Lindsay Clancy loved her children as closing arguments came to a dramatic conclusion Monday.

“She had no motive. She loved her children,” Reddington said. “She’s in her own personal hell…she’s still living her own nightmare.

“She knows what happened to those kids.

“Normally I’d thank you,” Reddington told jurors. “But in this case, God bless you.”

Judge William Sullivan sent jurors out for the morning recess at 11:05 a.m.

Clancy’s ex-husband Patrick is set to take the stand when court resumes.

Lindsay Clancy sought help for postpartum psychosis 19 times in months leading up to killings: defense

By
Georgia Worrell

Lindsay Clancy desperately sought help for her crippling postpartum psychosis 19 times in the months leading up to the fatal strangling of her children, her defense attorney told a jury Monday.

Clancy sought help from one psychiatrist in September 2022, went to doctors on two occasions the following month, had four visits with specialists in November 2022 and saw doctors a whopping eight times in December that year.

In January 2023, she went to doctors four more times -— until ultimately experiencing a full-blown psychotic break on Jan. 24, when she murdered the children before attempting to take her own life.

“She was so depressed…she couldn’t laugh, she couldn’t cry, she couldn’t have any feelings. She was a robot…an absolute zombie,” the defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, said — and insisted this wasn’t “someone who was faking because she didn’t want to be a mother anymore.”

At one point, Clancy called her parents for help taking care of the children.

“This is a woman that was a nurse, she worked for one of the best hospitals in the country…. Cora was even named after the very first baby that she helped deliver as a nurse,” Reddington said of his client.

“This is a woman who dedicated her life to nothing other than helping others, being the best nurse and best mom.

“This is not a righteous prosecution,” Reddington blasted.

Bloody knife, other grisly evidence photos revealed during opening statements

By

Harrowing photos shown to a jury Monday showed Lindsay Clancy attached to a breathing tube and suffering from numerous injuries from her botched suicide attempt after killing her three children.

Clancy’s neck appeared bloody and in a brace in photos taken in the hospital after the mom sliced her wrists and threw herself out of a second-story window, paralyzing herself, after fatally strangling the kids on Jan. 24, 2023.

Another image showed her bloodied wrists.

Kevin Reddington, Clancy’s defense attorney, also presented grisly photos of the crime scene.

In one of those photos, a bloodied kitchen knife sat next to a cup emblazoned with the message, “Because kids.”

“You see the white residue inside the cup — that’s where the pills were crushed up,” Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, told the jury, referring to the medication that Clancy allegedly ingested before throwing herself out the window.

A sleep medication bottle and sleep-aid spray were also seen in that photo of a nightstand. Clancy “couldn’t sleep for months,” the lawyer said.

Another showed pools of blood covering a bedroom floor.

Lindsay Clancy was ‘not psychotic’ on the day she killed her 3 kids: prosecutor

By
Georgia Worrell

Lindsay Clancy was “not psychotic” on the day she fatally strangled her three kids, the prosecutor insisted Monday.

“This case is about the Lindsay Clancy on Jan. 24, 2023 – at the time of the crimes. This was not a woman in the throes of psychosis…this is a woman who acted intentionally, rationally and swiftly with a very specific goal – to kill,” prosecutor Shanan Buckingham said during opening statements.

The attorney warned the jury that they would hear from people she interacted with earlier in the day before the murders — including people at the doctor’s office and friends she texted with that day.

“The evidence will show you that she was not psychotic that day,” Buckingham said.

Aaisha Alvi was sitting in a doctor’s office when she first heard the command.

At the same time, she saw a vision of a long carver knife plunging into her 4-year-old daughter Lina’s chest again and again.

“I didn’t want to do what the voice was telling me, but at the same time, I felt like it was going to make me do it,” she told The Post.

Lindsay Clancy’s youngest child had a heartbeat after being strangled

By
Georgia Worrell

Callan Clancy, 8 months old, had a heartbeat when he arrived at a local hospital after his mother strangled him and his two older siblings with an exercise band, a prosecutor revealed in court Monday.

Doctors “were able to get a heartbeat on Callan, but he never started breathing on his own, he never regained consciousness, and he had no brain activity,” prosecutor Shanan Buckingham told jurors during opening statements.

He died at Boston Children’s Hospital three days later.

The other two children, 5-year-old Cora and 3-year-old Dawson, were immediately pronounced dead.

First responders tried to resuscitate the kids all the way to the hospital, according to Buckingham.

Details from Patrick Clancy’s chilling 911 call revealed in court

By
Georgia Worrell

When Patrick Clancy returned home with take-out and a CVS bag on Jan. 24, 2023, “it’s eerily quiet,” prosecutor Shanan Buckingham told the jury during opening statements.

“He calls to the kids. No answer. He calls to the defendant. No answer.

“He immediately goes upstairs to find the master bedroom door locked, before finding his [now] ex-wife paralyzed from a jump out of the second-story window in a botched bid to kill herself.”

Clancy tells him the kids are in the basement, and that’s when he calls 911, according to Buckingham.

He’s still on the phone with 911 when he finds the slain children and says, “She killed the kids!” Buckingham told the jury.

First responders tried to resuscitate the kids all the way to the hospital, to no avail, the prosecutor added.

Lindsay Clancy googled how long husband Patrick would be gone from the house before murdering their 3 children, prosecutor claims

By
Georgia Worrell

Prosecuting attorney Jennifer Sprague revealed that Lindsay Clancy Google-searched how far the restaurant was where Patrick was going to pick up take-out before he left.

“[She] searched the route that it would take for Patrick to go to the restaurant,” Sprague told jurors — even though the family had eaten there before.

“When Patrick leaves the house around 5:15 that evening, everything is normal – seems normal. He sees Dawson eating chicken nuggets and green beans on the couch before he walks out of the door.

“That’s when the clock starts, ladies and gentlemen,” Buckingham said.

“The defendant knows he needs to stop at CVS, go to [the restaurant], she knows it’s about five miles to get to the restaurant from their house — she knows approximately how much time she has for him to go there and come back.”

“She then takes the children into the basement. She separates Dawson from Cora and Callan, and then she proceeds to wrap exercise bands around each child’s neck and then pull until they are dead. She leaves the bands wrapped around each child’s neck and then goes back upstairs” where she tries to kill herself,” Sprague said.
