49ers give update after head coach Kyle Shanahan car crash

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch gave an update on head coach Kyle Shanahan’s condition Saturday morning after news broke that he suffered major injuries in a car crash earlier this month.

Lynch said in a press conference that Shanahan is suffering “lingering effects” from the severe concussion he endured and is being “basically” treated like he’s in an NFL concussion protocol. The executive noted Shanahan will be out on the field for training camp “to what he can tolerate.”

“Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol,” he said. “Doc [Anthony Saglimbeni] and all the great doctors we have are giving him great care, and we’re going to let you know [his] condition… the doctors dictate how he comes back, when he comes back.”

Lynch said assistant head coach Chris Foerster will assume Shanahan’s duties “in concert with our staff,” but will be the “acting” head coach.

“Chris is the acting head coach, but it is going to be very much a collective effort,” he said.

Shanahan suffered horrific injuries — including a severe concussion — in a car crash near his Northern California home.

Shanahan’s vehicle collided with an SUV on July 14, leaving the coach with a broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken hand, according to ESPN. He also had to get 40 stitches in his face.

Shanahan was rushed to the hospital for treatment before being released later in the day, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The other driver was uninjured.

Shanahan has been recovering at home and is believed to be progressing well, though doctors are not expected to clear him for full participation until his concussion symptoms subside. The team has not provided a timetable for his return.

Police said both drivers cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the crash or said whether either driver was at fault.

“Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault,” Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez said in a statement to ESPN.

Shanahan is expected to be limited as the team opens training camp on Sunday, according to the team.

“Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.”

Shanahan only informed his fellow coaches of the wreck on Tuesday, ESPN reported.

Lynch also noted Shanahan’s injuries will not impact the team’s travel plans for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
