49ers’ Kyle Shanahan suffers horrific injuries in car crash near California home

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan suffered horrific injuries — including a severe concussion — in a car crash near his Northern California home last week.

Shanahan’s vehicle collided with an SUV on July 14, leaving the coach with a broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken hand, according to ESPN. He also had to get 40 stitches in his face.

Shanahan was rushed to the hospital for treatment before being released later in the day, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The other driver was uninjured.

Shanahan has been recovering at home and is believed to be progressing well, though doctors are not expected to clear him for full participation until his concussion symptoms subside. The team has not provided a timetable for his return.

Police said both drivers cooperated with investigators, and no citations were issued. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the crash or said whether either driver was at fault.

“Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault,” Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez said in a statement to ESPN.

Shanahan is expected to be limited as the team opens training camp on Sunday, according to the team.

“Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers,” the 49ers said in a statement. “Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.”

The team added that assistant head coach Chris Foerster and 49ers coordinators will step in to handle head coaching duties.

Shanahan only informed his fellow coaches of the wreck on Tuesday, ESPN reported.

The accident comes before a notable season for Shanahan. His 10th year with San Francisco will tie Bill Walsh for the longest coaching tenure in franchise history. Shanahan enters the season with 82 regular-season victories, third most in team history.
