A Minnesota State Fairgoer was savagely attacked by a group of \u201cyoung men\u201d who fractured his jaw in multiple places \u2014 turning his night out with friends into a \u201chellish nightmare,\u201d his fiance\u00e9 claimed.<\/p>\n

Sammy Kimbrough, 45, was left in critical condition and needed emergency reconstructive surgery Saturday night after the brutal assault that knocked him unconscious and left him bloodied at the annual event in St. Paul, Minn.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast night, Sammy was brutally assaulted by a group of young men in a completely senseless act of violence,\u201d Kimbrough\u2019s fiance\u00e9 Heather Hoffman wrote on Facebook Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who knows Sammy knows that he is one of the most laid-back, kind-hearted, and non-confrontational men you could ever meet. This has been a lot to wrap our heads around,\u201d Hoffman added.<\/p>\n

Kimbrough attended the closing weekend of the state fair, which is billed as the largest in Minnesota, with friends and his soon-to-be-bride when he was attacked. <\/p>\n

Kimbrough and two others split from the main group and were exploring the 322-acre fairground when he accidentally bumped into another person who was with a group of eight to 12 people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis young man ended up getting into a verbal conversation with Sammy, becoming aggressive,\u201d Hoffman told St. Paul Pioneer Press. \u201cSammy had tried to say, \u2018Excuse me,\u2019 \u2018Back up,\u2019 when he then got punched.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimbrough was knocked down by another person who threw a punch before more people in the group began \u201cstomping his face into the pavement,\u201d Hoffman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat should have been an insignificant moment escalated into something unimaginable. The group attacked him, knocking him unconscious and kicking him in the face after he had fallen,\u201d family friend Kira Roland wrote on GoFundMe.<\/p>\n

Kimbrough was knocked out and bleeding from the mouth, suffering a \u201csignificant fracture\u201d to the right side of his jaw and several smaller fractures to the front left side, Roland added.<\/p>\n

He was rushed to Regions Hospital in St. Paul and underwent emergency surgery, during which doctors placed plates and screws into his jaw.<\/p>\n

Kimbrough was hospitalized for two days and discharged on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The injuries were so severe, surgeons had to bandage his mouth shut and add bands to hold the jaw in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce that fracture heals enough for him to open his mouth, he then will have very extensive dental surgery as he has a whole lot of broken, knocked out and loose teeth in his mouth because of this,\u201d Hoffman told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Kimbrough said the surgery went well and was ready for the next step.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be a long recovery!\u201d he wrote on Facebook. \u201cI\u2019ll be back to normal in no time!\u201d<\/p>\n

State Fair police confirmed the alleged assault took place Saturday night, but no arrests have been made, CBS News Minnesota reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of right now, the people responsible have not been caught. When they are identified, we will absolutely be pursuing charges to the fullest extent of the law,\u201d Hoffman said. \u201cThere is no excuse for this kind of violence, those responsible will be held accountable for what they have done.\u201d<\/p>\n
