DALLAS \u2014 Senate Majority Leader John Thune is brushing off the boos he got at the midterm convention, telling The Post Thursday that he realizes he could be a drag for some GOP frontliners and is more than willing to steer clear of races where his influence won\u2019t improve a candidate\u2019s chances.<\/p>\n

Thune (R-SD) said in an exclusive interview that he tells every candidate the same thing when discussing their 2026 campaign: \u201cI\u2019ll come out for you or against you, whichever helps you the most.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd sometimes when you\u2019re the dreaded establishment in Washington, you know what the answer to that is,\u201d he joked. \u201cWe want to engage however we can, be helpful however we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republicans control the House and the Senate but are facing headwinds going into the Nov. 3 elections, with Democrats holding a more than six percentage point lead on the generic congressional ballot, according to the RealClearPolitics polling aggregator.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president is trying to generate intensity among Republican voters who otherwise in a midterm election might not be inclined to come out and vote,\u201d Thune explained, \u201cbut I think he\u2019s trying to convey the sense of urgency \u2014 that you need to treat this like I\u2019m on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Senate majority leader has been doing the same from the sidelines \u2014 not the main stage \u2014 in Dallas, where he is holding fundraising events behind the scenes rather than speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a number of our candidates down here and we had a box where we were hosting them yesterday,\u201d Thune said.<\/p>\n

President Trump had praised Thune moments before the boos from the crowd of Republican attendees, saying the majority leader was destined for \u201cgreat success.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn is working hard. He\u2019s got great opposition. He\u2019s got great opposition from the Democrat, Schumer and these guys, they\u2019re terrible,\u201d Trump responded to the crowd\u2019s jeers. \u201cHe\u2019s gonna have great success, you watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thune said he was nearby, but didn\u2019t hear the president\u2019s compliment \u201cdirectly\u201d \u2014 though he\u2019d \u201cheard there were many boos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s frustrated with my leadership,\u201d he added. \u201cI think he\u2019s very frustrated with the Senate and institutionally, the rules and the regulations and the procedures and the precedents and everything else we have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

That\u2019s been one reason why Trump\u2019s signature voter ID bill, the SAVE America Act, has stalled for months without enough juice to clear the 60-vote filibuster.<\/p>\n

Thune\u2019s gotten blowback from hardline Republicans for failing to pass the bill, but noted that Democrats\u2019 obstruction has made it difficult to pass even typically bipartisan measures \u2014 and led to the highest number of roll call votes on the floor in Senate history since 1976.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just reflective of how hard the Democrats have made it to do anything,\u201d he noted. \u201cYou know, it used to be in the Senate it takes consent to do almost anything, and they\u2019re just not giving it and they haven\u2019t been working with us because they want to fight this president tooth and nail, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what\u2019s at\u00a0stake if they get the majority in the House and the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n
