Suicide rates among girls have grown at a faster rate than boys in recent years, thanks to younger access to social media and the impact of the COVID lockdowns, according to experts.<\/p>\n

Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among 10- to 14-year-olds in the US, with marked increases noted between 2007 and 2021, according to a new\u00a0report in JAMA Pediatrics, an American Medical Association-published medical journal released Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Historically, male suicide rates have been higher than female suicide rates across all age groups, but between 2007 and 2017, the suicide rate for girls aged 10 to 19 increased far more than the rate for males.<\/p>\n

While huge emphasis in recent years has been placed on the dangers of toxic online spaces on young boys \u2014 such as Andrew Tate\u2019s manosphere \u2014 commentators may have overlooked how susceptible young girls were to pernicious content on social media, according to the report\u2019s author, Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom roughly 2010 to 2019, I think it\u2019s pretty clear that social media and smartphones were behind a lot of that increase in suicides, especially for girls,\u201d Twenge, author of \u201c10 Rules for Raising Kids in a High-Tech World,\u201d told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial media use is more strongly linked to depression and other mental health issues among girls than it is among boys,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this age group really saw an increase in social media use post-2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teens began spending \u201ca lot more time online and a lot less time with friends in person, and a lot less time sleeping,\u201d said Twenge, who was an expert witness for the prosecution in August\u2019s landmark federal trial against Meta.<\/p>\n

While young people being subject to peer pressure and bullying is nothing new, Twenge warns that social media has turbocharged that by replacing peer dynamics with concrete metrics.<\/p>\n

\u201cPopularity has become a number,\u201d she said. \u201cIt used to be, \u2018This girl or that girl is more popular,\u2019 but now, it\u2019s \u2018How many followers do you have? How many likes did you get on this post?’\u201d<\/p>\n

For girls, \u201cthose likes are often based on sexualized appearance, which is a lot of pressure, especially for girls in that 10 to 14 age group,\u201d Twenge said.<\/p>\n

As girls\u2019 feedback and social approval became more closely tied to \u201chow much skin you show,\u201d Twenge blames apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat for creating a \u201cperfect storm.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Meta\u2019s own research, girls experience a \u201cgrief spiral\u201d of being constantly exposed to influencers with \u201cperfect\u201d bodies, making them feel bad about themselves.<\/p>\n

But what about boys who are also being bombarded with constant imagery of wealth, chiseled abs, and glamor?<\/p>\n

Male social comparisons tend to be \u201cagentic,\u201d centered on achievable actions such as working out, getting a job, or making money, Twenge explained.<\/p>\n

In contrast, comparisons for girls focus primarily on physical appearance, which is far less changeable, she argued.<\/p>\n

Twenge also blames the exposure of younger and younger children to social media, exposing girls as young as 10 to toxic dynamics at an earlier developmental stage.<\/p>\n

Since the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020, suicide rates among boys aged 10 to 14, which were previously rising, have decreased, whereas suicide rates for girls in the same age group continued to increase.<\/p>\n

Twenge blames that decrease in young male suicide rates on the easing of pandemic restrictions, as well as heightened public attention on male suicide rates and greater effectiveness of suicide prevention programs for boys.<\/p>\n

Twenge called for the enforcement of existing age limits to keep children aged 12 and under completely off social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe existing age restriction of 13 was not settled on for any developmental reason. It was a compromise made with the tech companies in 1998, and it hasn\u2019t been updated since,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

She also argued the US could follow Australia\u2019s lead by requiring users to be 16 or older to have a social media account, or enforce stricter age verification controls, which Meta agreed to as part of a legal court settlement.<\/p>\n

Finally, Twenge argued for automatically blocking social media platform access for minors between midnight and 6 a.m. to prevent late-night phone usage and directly target sleep deprivation, a primary risk factor for depression, self-harm, and suicide.<\/p>\n

Children\u2019s suicide-related emergency visits in the US spiked by 74% between 2016 and 2022, according to a peer-reviewed article\u00a0published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n

Representatives for Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
