It\u2019s a widow who has to explain to her children that their father is\u00a0 not coming home. The retiree who survived 9\/11 only to find out, years later, that the dust he breathed in is still killing him,\u201d Eustace said. \u201cThat\u2019s why today matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The heartwrenching remarks came as the terror attack\u2019s quarter-century anniversary loomed Friday, putting the plight of surviving 9\/11 first responders into harsh focus.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=8498\">JJ McCarthy demoted to third-string QB to cement his Vikings downfall<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>More than 12,000 fire department members have been diagnosed with at least one illness related to the Twin Towers\u2019 collapse, according to the FDNY World Trade Center Health Program.<\/p>\n<p>The release of 170,000 previously secret files Tuesday by Mayor Zohran Mamdani presented an opportunity to help afflicted Ground Zero responders in their treatment, said Lt. James Brosi, president of the FDNY Uniformed Fire Officers Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that we find more definitive chemicals that were in the air that we don\u2019t already know, right?\u201d he said, noting the presence of asbestos is already well-known.<\/p>\n<p>Identifying the chemicals could also help responders get covered for their treatment, Eustace said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you get cancer and it\u2019s not 9\/11-related, the city tells you you\u2019re on your own. That\u2019s what they tell you.
