The deadly Ebola outbreak in Africa has prompted New York City health officials to start screening airline passengers arriving\u00a0at\u00a0John F. Kennedy\u00a0Airport,\u00a0the CDC announced,\u00a0after the agency confirmed a US doctor had tested positive for the virus.<\/p>\n

JFK became the fourth major transport hub on Friday \u2014 joining Washington Dulles International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston \u2014 to begin the health assessments.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organization declared the current Bundibugyo strain outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 15.<\/p>\n

The outbreak began in the northeastern Ituri province and spread to neighboring Uganda, and as of May 30, there are 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths, according to data from the WHO.<\/p>\n

Peter Stafford, 39, a US doctor with the missionary group Serge, unknowingly operated on\u00a0a patient with the virus before the outbreak was detected, according to the CDC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He tested positive on May 24 and officials said he has been flown to a hospital in Germany for treatment.<\/p>\n

For the past week, the US has been rerouting travelers from the Congo, South Sudan and Uganda to select airports to receive enhanced public health screenings in an effort to identify people who may have been exposed.<\/p>\n

The revised rule now applies the ability to suspend introduction into the US to lawful permanent residents (green card holders) who have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda or South Sudan within the last 21 days are prevented from entering the US.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic health entry screening serves as one component of CDC\u2019s layered public health approach,\u201d the CDC said in the May 29 announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese actions are based on current epidemiological evidence, ongoing risk assessments, and the highly serious nature of BVD (Bundibugyo). This order will be in effect for 30 days, effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
