Researchers recently uncovered a\u00a0long-lost medieval convent\u00a0in an unusual location in Denmark: a soccer field \u2014 with an expert sharing details with Fox News Digital about the \u201crare\u201d find.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The discovery, made in Roskilde, was announced last month by ROMU, a state-recognized Danish museum organization.<\/p>\n

St. Clare\u2019s Convent, which was built in\u00a0the 13th century, was found through a ground-penetrating radar survey ahead of plans to build an underground parking facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe survey revealed a well-preserved convent complex approximately one meter [three feet] below ground level,\u201d officials said in a press release.<\/p>\n

The scans also \u201crevealed traces of the convent\u2019s buildings, including rooms, columns, cloisters and a church in the southern wing,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe eastern wing, in particular, is exceptionally well-preserved, with clearly defined rooms and vault pillars,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

St. Clare\u2019s was one of five monastic sites in medieval Roskilde. Unlike the other four, it was not protected as an\u00a0ancient monument\u00a0because it was believed to have been lost.<\/p>\n

Researchers are working with the municipality on plans for trial excavations at the proposed parking site.<\/p>\n

Excavations of monasteries and convents\u00a0are \u201crare,\u201d said Jesper Langkilde, an archaeologist and museum curator at ROMU.<\/p>\n

Langkilde told Fox News Digital he was \u201cquite surprised\u201d by the discovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI almost didn\u2019t believe my own eyes that so much was still there, and that we got such a clear image of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The convent was a large complex, measuring roughly 230 feet by 230 feet.<\/p>\n

Although the convent was demolished in\u00a0the 16th century\u00a0and hundreds of thousands of its bricks were removed, much of its underground footprint survived.<\/p>\n

Langkilde said the radar is detecting the lowest portions of the walls and foundations, which were made with large boulders that were often left in place when medieval buildings were torn down.<\/p>\n

Historical records show that about 500,000 bricks were sold after the convent was demolished, but Langkilde said a complex of its size could easily have contained twice that number.<\/p>\n

Though there hasn\u2019t been an excavation of the site yet, Langkilde said archaeologists expect to find \u201cquite a lot of artifacts,\u201d especially those from\u00a0daily medieval life.<\/p>\n

Excavators expect to find everything from \u201clots of pottery sherds and animal bones\u201d to \u201creligious objects, like pendant crosses, rosary beads and pilgrims\u2019 badges\u201d and objects related to\u00a0writing and books, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe convents and monasteries were centers of literacy and had libraries and book production,\u201d added Langkilde, noting that book fittings, writing utensils and personal effects like combs and needles are also expected.<\/p>\n

If organic remains are well-preserved, archaeologists could learn more about the nuns\u2019 diets and the\u00a0plants grown\u00a0in the convent gardens.<\/p>\n

Researchers also expect to\u00a0find burials at the site, which \u201ccan tell us about who the nuns were and who else was buried at the convent,\u201d Langkilde said.<\/p>\n

The discoveries could also reveal the convent\u2019s international connections. Its first nuns are believed to have come from a convent in Strasbourg, according to Langkilde.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe convents were part of international networks, so it would be interesting to look for signs of international relations in the [material] from this site,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The discovery] is very significant, since we know very little of the monasteries in Roskilde from an archaeological point of view,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The expert also called the discovery \u201ca very big step forward for our knowledge of the\u00a0medieval monasteries.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[They] played a key part in the development of Roskilde as one of the most important and wealthiest towns in medieval Denmark,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Langkilde added, \u201cIt is an excellent example of how much archeological knowledge a geophysical survey can contribute \u2014 under the right circumstances \u2014 without even putting a shovel to the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n
