Instead of requesting diamonds or rare gems \u2014 the far lighter, more mobile currency the agency has long favored for clandestine work \u2014 Rush asked for heavy gold bars, a choice a former senior CIA official told The Post was an obvious red flag.<\/p>\n

Now Rush is incarcerated in an Alexandria, Va., lockup and charged carrying out a massive theft \u2013 although it is the spy agency itself facing tough questions from lawmakers about how he was ever allowed to get this far.<\/p>\n

The first clue is the gold itself. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou tend to go in other directions because it\u2019s lighter. Precious jewels are better. Diamonds are better,\u201d former CIA Iran targets officer Reuel Marc Gerecht told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t realize how heavy money is. It was regularly a problem for large payments \u2013 particularly if you\u2019re trying to do it clandestinely. You could just weigh yourself down with cash. Gold \u2013 you\u2019d need mules,\u201d he exclaimed.<\/p>\n

The security breakdown allegedly\u00a0allowed Rush, who had a top secret security clearance, to hoard in stages 303 gold bars valued at $40 million and weighing 667 pounds. <\/p>\n

He also compiled three dozen luxe watches, mostly Rolexes, and $2 million in cash, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Eastern District of Virginia. Each bar weighs 1 kilogram, or 2.2 pounds.<\/p>\n

The scandal is drawing fierce backlash, with the Senate Intelligence Committee now launching \u201caggressive\u201d oversight into the agency\u2019s loose purse strings and lax vetting.<\/p>\n

The government says that Rush managed to fabricate major parts of his academic and military history \u2013 apparently fooling trained probers and hauling away massive amounts of loot without immediately triggering alarm, in part because the CIA operates on blind trust. He allegedly said the booty was needed for \u201cwork-related expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not British banking. You don\u2019t have multiple lines of people checking things. The agency is a system that operates largely on trust. Sometimes they have been burned by that,\u201d Gerecht said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a humiliation for the CIA,\u201d said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, the watchdog group that has hammered the Secret Service for putting President Trump at risk.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows that the agency is a disaster in terms of internal security,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a crisis in terms of security at the CIA. Who else is working there who has a fabricated background?\u201dhe said.<\/p>\n

The Post reported Friday that the breach could reveal dangerous patterns.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that this slipped through the cracks makes me concerned that there are other people who slipped through the cracks.\u201d said former CIA staff operations officer\u00a0Tracy\u00a0Walder.<\/p>\n

The timeline outlined in an FBI agent\u2019s affidavit points to just some of the lapses. <\/p>\n

It accuses Rush of providing false information about his education \u201con his application to the USG\u201d \u2013 meaning it wasn\u2019t picked up on his initial background check. <\/p>\n

Contradictory information was allegedly later uncovered in US Navy records \u2013 that apparently also got missed.<\/p>\n

The affidavit states that he applied to work for the feds three times, using different information each time, another missed opportunity. <\/p>\n

Investigators didn\u2019t immediately uncover that he didn\u2019t have a pilot\u2019s license \u2013 and that he wasn\u2019t a flight instructor.<\/p>\n

The massive haul of gold and funds were removed between November 2025 and March 2026, meaning they were allowed more than once. It says the CIA alerted the FBI after conducting its own internal probe, but doesn\u2019t say when.<\/p>\n

Nor have the feds been able to locate what has happened to a \u201csignificant amounts\u201d of foreign currency, according to the affidavit. <\/p>\n

Lawmakers are already gearing up to do their own digging.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate Intelligence Committee exists to conduct rigorous oversight of the Intelligence Community, including ensuring accountability when serious allegations of misconduct arise,\u201d said Rachel Cohen, a spokeswoman for Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.<\/p>\n

She said Warner was \u201cclosely following the matter\u201d and would work with panel chair Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) \u201cto carry out the Committee\u2019s oversight responsibilities thoroughly and\u00a0aggressively\u201d \u2013 an indication the agency would have to provide detailed explanations to lawmakers about what went wrong.<\/p>\n

The House Intelligence panel is also gathering information, without tipping its hand. \u201cThe House Intel Committee and Chairman [Rick] Crawford (R-Ariz.) have been kept updated on this case as things developed,\u201d said a committee source.<\/p>\n

Those panels are the main overseers of the agency, which has long resisted outside accounting.<\/p>\n

A 2001 Government Accountability Office report said the Agency had not been audited since the 1960s, in part because \u201cwe have no access to certain CIA \u2018unvouchered accounts\u2019 and cannot compel our access to foreign intelligence and counterintelligence info.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rush\u2019s attorney didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. \u201cThe FBI is working closely with our partners at the CIA and the Department of Justice as we continue to investigate this matter fully,\u201d the agencies said in a joint statement. <\/p>\n
