NYC school kids will be pried from their screens this school year.<\/p>\n

A new sweeping policy \u2014 said to be the strictest in the nation \u2014 will prevent local public school kids in elementary and middle school from using AI or spending excessive time on screens during the school day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re putting guardrails in place to protect the critical human connection, curiosity, and creativity that helps children grow,\u201d Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The new rules, which will go into effect this month, prevent kids in preschool through 8th grade from using any sort of generative AI, while high schoolers will only be able to use AI in limited supervised contexts. The policy also firms up guardrails for teachers: no AI for grading, monitoring behavior, or writing special education plans.<\/p>\n

Parents, teachers, and students themselves should be cheering. This policy is an encouraging (albeit overdue) step towards freeing childhood from the grips of Big Tech.<\/p>\n

Districts across the country have for years embraced laptops, tablets, and gadgets to help \u201cprepare kids for a digital age.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, little did they know, what they were really doing is introducing distractions into the classroom that made kids even less prepared for the real world.<\/p>\n

At my own elementary and middle school in the early 2000s, educators thought they were doing the best thing by digitizing our black board with \u201cSmart Boards\u201d that upload notes online and arming every 5th grader with a MacBook.<\/p>\n

But all that did was unleash cyberbullying, teach us to pretend to pay attention in class while we were scrolling the internet, and condition us for a life lived behind screens \u2014 precisely during the school hours when kids are supposed to be learning, socializing, and living in the real world with one another.<\/p>\n

In 2026 it has become clear, children need to learn to think for themselves before they get in the habit of outsourcing to a computer.<\/p>\n

School districts who were sold over the past several decades on the idea of being \u201ctech-forward\u201d are realizing that was a massive mistake.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Massive pluralities of students with device access from across the world report being frequently distracted during lessons. Reading comprehension is measurably better when text is encountered on a paper. Plus, the weakest students improve the most when devices are removed from the classroom, according to researchers.<\/p>\n

The fact that companies were eager to give devices to schools for free should have been a warning of their ulterior motive: hardwiring them to become lifelong customers.<\/p>\n

Already, AI companies are courting schools making promises about how their technology will augment education. Google is pushing to integrate Gemini AI into platforms schools already use, and OpenAI has been partnering with schools across the country.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

But it seems like New York City has already learned its lesson, and it won\u2019t be falling for the techno-utopianism again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tech industry wants us to believe that AI-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary,\u201d Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement. \u201cWe do not see it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

His approach is correct. Yes, AI seems destined to become a larger and larger part of our lives, both personally and professionally. But we don\u2019t need to surrender our children to that inevitability.<\/p>\n

What kids deserve \u2014 and need \u2014 is a childhood protected from the influence of Big Tech, where they can learn to formulate their own ideas, solve their own problems, and interact with the world without a virtual intermediary.\u00a0<\/p>\n
