Former Jets running backs coach and ex-Memphis legendary quarterback Kippy Brown died Monday at the age of 71, according to the university.<\/p>\n

Brown also played a critical role in helping the Seahawks win their first Super Bowl in 2014 before retiring after the 2015 season, and coached for seven NFL teams during his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a great friend to everybody, because he had such a positive, good, fun-loving spirit,\u201d former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told the team\u2019s website for an article published Tuesday. \u201cEverybody loved being around Kip. And he had a light about him, he wanted to have a good time and have fun and make things pleasant for everyone around him. That\u2019s why so many people have rallied around him in this last month or so and reached out to (his wife) Deon, being supportive and loving. He was a wonderful person, and my heart goes out to Deon and the family. It\u2019s a beautiful family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brown made history as a collegiate quarterback before be began his lengthy coaching career.<\/p>\n

He became the first black quarterback in Memphis history \u2014 then Memphis State \u2014 while playing for the program from 1974-77, per the school, and is credited with appearing in 33 games.<\/p>\n

Brown famously pioneered an upset of No. 7 Auburn on Sept. 13, 1975.<\/p>\n

His time with the program led to him being inducted into the the M Club Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.<\/p>\n

After hanging up the boots, Brown embarked on his coaching career and began in the college ranks by serving as an assistant for his alma mater, Louisville and Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Brown took the next step in 1990 when he joined the Jets under head coach Bruce Coslet on a staff that included his future boss in Carroll.<\/p>\n

He spent three years with the Jets and would ultimately bounce around during his time in the league, also serving on the coaching staffs, in order, of the Buccaneers, Dolphins, Packers, Texans and Lions before ending his career with Carroll in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n

Players he coached included Hall of Famers Dan Marino, Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson, according to Memphis.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me as a young person to have him as my rookie coach, I know I would not have been the player I was if it wasn\u2019t for Kippy,\u201d ex-Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin told the team website. \u201cI owe a great deal to him as a coach who helped me develop as a player, but also the man that he was, the way that he held us accountable as young men, doing it in a way that was considerate, and we knew he was only doing it because he loved and cared about us, I wouldn\u2019t be the man that I am today without Kippy Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n
