The Fashion Police have laid down the law.<\/p>\n

The day after John Galliano pulled out (or, as some sources hint, was forced out) of his Met Gala headliner status, red carpet expert Melissa Rivers called Page Six Style to discuss the repercussions to both the \u201cparty of the year\u201d and its embattled leader, Anna Wintour.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnna Wintour is brilliant,\u201d Rivers said from her gleaming Beverly Hills kitchen. \u201cBut people rarely say no [to her], and in the past, she\u2019s made some mistakes of not reading the room correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rivers says she was especially surprised that a designer with a history of anti-Asian and anti-Jewish bigotry would get a million-dollar party as New York City hate crimes continue to surge.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was such a force of nature in fashion and design\u2026 Is it a great time to honor his work? Unfortunately, no, not a great read of the room, especially coming off the whole backlash with [Jeff] Bezos and Lauren Sanchez,\u201d she said, referring to the protests against last year\u2019s Met Gala hosts \u2014 the Amazon scion and his ultra-glamorous wife \u2014 that tried (and failed) to start an Upper East Side class war.<\/p>\n

The daughter of legendary Jewish American comedian Joan Rivers, Melissa admits her late mother \u201cwould have hated\u201d a Galliano-themed bash \u2014 but that she was a fan of the clothes.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my favorite dresses was Galliano,\u201d she said. \u201cOh my god, one of the other <\/em>favorite dresses was Galliano!\u201d The gowns burned up in the 2025 LA fires. \u201cWhat a waste. I think of it now as extreme closet cleaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rivers suspects the Gala\u2019s early cancellation came as a relief to more than a few Hollywood publicists, none of whom wanted to prep their clients to speak about the nuances of art, redemption, and bias-cut lace lingerie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure people would have been very uncomfortable,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of the publicists were white-knuckling it,\u201d she added. Now \u201cthey\u2019ve gotten blood back in their fingertips!\u201d<\/p>\n

So what should the new <\/em>Met Gala theme be?<\/p>\n

Rivers isn\u2019t sold on the social media push to change the theme to honor the late Dolly Parton.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s wide enough of a theme,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause you don\u2019t want everybody trying to impersonate someone.\u201d She\u2019s not even sure a show about \u201cthe Great West\u201d would work, because cowboy couture belongs so strongly to one nice Jewish guy from the Bronx: \u201cIt\u2019d be all Ralph Lauren!\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n

But Rivers admitted the worst theme would be miniskirts \u2014 specifically the kind that make your bare butt touch a subway or airplane seat. \u201cThis is my biggest fashion ick,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople who look uncomfortable in their clothes\u2026 and when you are sitting in a miniskirt or a minidress that literally your butt is going to be touching the chair.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she sees a teeny-skirted starlet on the red carpet, Rivers says she\u2019s nearly as queasy as she was when Galliano\u2019s initial Met Gala theme was chosen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re like, \u2018Wow, she\u2019s got legs!<\/em>\u2018\u2026 And then you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh f\u2014k, she has to sit down.’\u201d<\/p>\n
