Calls for Anna Wintour to take a break \u2014 or to release her ironclad grip on Vogue altogether \u2014 have hit fever pitch amid John Galliano\u2019s announcement that he was removing himself as this year\u2019s Met Gala theme.<\/p>\n

Sources tell Page Six all roads lead back to Wintour\u2019s zest to rehab her pal, when it comes to her latest scandal to rock Cond\u00e9 Nast since being named the company\u2019s global chief content officer and artist director.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnna singlehandedly thought she could willfully get [Galliano] back in [fashion]. She\u2019s been at it a long time, and she really misjudged it, and she made him vulnerable while doing that,\u201d an industry insider told us.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not reading the f\u2013king room \u2026 She really overplayed her hand. They really need to take a beat, take a year off, because people don\u2019t have time for this s\u2013t right now,\u201d our source fumed.<\/p>\n

Wintour and Galliano are longtime friends. She supported him in the years following a stint in rehab, as well as during his atonement for making antisemitic and racist remarks in a Paris caf\u00e9 in 2011. <\/p>\n

In February of this year, a fashion source spotted the duo having a long dinner with Vogue vet Grace Coddington at Balthazaar in New York\u2019s Soho neighborhood, which led the source to speculate, \u201cSomething is up. Anna is up to something.\u201d<\/p>\n

In July, Wintour announced \u201cJohn Galliano: Horizons\u201d as the theme for the 2027 Met Gala. A source close to Wintour insisted the decision wasn\u2019t all based on her influence.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople seem to think she\u2019s the sole person [making the decision about Met theme],\u201d they said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge amount of people on the Met board that signed off on this. She\u2019s a piece of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t her decision alone, by any stretch of the imagination. His exhibition \u2026 people have been speaking about it for at least a couple of years. It was a big group decision. It\u2019s a team effort. Not just her,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

The choice sparked swift backlash from Jewish leaders and the museum\u2019s donors as soon as it was announced. <\/p>\n

On Monday. Galliano withdrew from the gala, writing in a statement: \u201cI remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI understand that meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. It is a continuing responsibility, demonstrated through listening, learning and one\u2019s conduct over time,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

A Cond\u00e9 insider told us that Wintour, \u201cdoesn\u2019t understand what people are talking about and thought she could shoulder through this and it would blow over,\u201d adding, \u201cAnna\u2019s lost her touch on the zeitgeist.\u201d<\/p>\n
