He\u2019s out of vogue \u2014 and so is she.<\/p>\n

Convicted Hitler-loving haute-couture designer John Galliano finally caved to outcry on Monday and bowed out of a planned Met Gala celebration for him \u2014 a move that also delivered a swift kick in the chiffon to powerhouse benefactor Anna Wintour.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,\u2019\u2019 the toppled trend-setter said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Galliano \u2014\u00a0a 65-year-old onetime Dior wunderkind and A-list designer to the stars \u2014 was forced to give himself the heave-ho thanks to a mounting campaign by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, wealthy donors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a host of Jewish leaders.<\/p>\n

His critics had been arguing behind the scenes for weeks and months \u2014 as they learned of the Met\u2019s decision to honor him \u2014 that he had no business being celebrated.<\/p>\n

The controversy then gained steam with a very public push from Menin, prompting frantic closed-door powwows among gala organizers and their critics, including many deep-pocket donors who threatened to move their money elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Met honchos \u201cshould have never made the decision in the first place,\u2019\u2019 Menin, the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, told The Post Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me this was a very straightforward issue,\u2019\u2019 said the pol \u2014 who even recently tried to personally convince Wintour during a Zoom call from City Hall that the Galliano fete was a bad move.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one thing to have work displayed by controversial artists,\u2019\u2019 Menin said. \u201cBut it\u2019s a choice to decide to honor and celebrate someone\u2019s legacy, and that is where I drew the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prominent Met donor Alice Tisch told The Post, \u201cIt was one of those things that, the more I thought about it, the less I thought of it. And I just decided to start raising it with a few of my friends who were trustees at the Met.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think she looks like she lost her judgment here,\u2019\u2019 Tisch said of Wintour, a top Met Trustee and Galliano\u2019s most influential supporter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my opinion, and I don\u2019t know her, but she looks like she fell in love with Galliano, and maybe she fell in love to the point that she couldn\u2019t see him for who he really is.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr maybe she saw him for who he is, and she believed that his work is just so great that everybody should see around all of this the same way she did, and that it\u2019s all irrelevant. I think she looks out of touch.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Wintour, the chief content officer of Cond\u00e9 Nast and former editor of Vogue, remained defiant, digging in her Manolos even after her embattled buddy \u2014 and she \u2014 got slapped down.<\/p>\n

The 76-year-old issued a fawning statement supporting Galliano\u2019s decision to step aside, calling it \u201cvery courageous\u2019\u2019 \u2014 prompting furious insiders at Cond\u00e9 Nast to label her seriously out of touch.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a big tone-deaf moment,\u2019\u2019 one Cond\u00e9 source said. \u201cPeople are questioning her judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added another insider: \u201cOof, it\u2019s so bad.\u2019\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Galliano would have been just the third living fashion designer honored in the Met Gala\u2019s 78-year history, with well-heeled attendees wearing his creations or duds inspired by them.<\/p>\n

An accompanying retrospective of his work, to be shown at the Met\u2019s Anna Wintour Costume Center would have opened on May 3, 2027 \u2014 Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n

But Galliano had horrified the world when he was caught in videos spewing vile anti-Jewish and -Asian hate around 2011.<\/p>\n

Footage captured the mustachioed menace hissing to a woman at a Paris cafe that she had a \u201cugly Jewish face\u201d and telling a man with her, \u201cF\u2013king Asian bastard, I will kill you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The designer \u2014 who has dressed everyone from Princess Diana to Kim Kardashian \u2014 also drunkenly told a Jewish woman, \u201cI love Hitler\u201d while saying her family should have been \u201cgassed\u201d during the Holocaust.<\/p>\n

His fall from fashion-world grace was swift at the time, leading to Galliano getting dropped by Dior and convicted in France of \u201cpublic insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity.\u2019\u2019 He was issued a fine.<\/p>\n

The fashion pariah claimed he was mentally unstable, entered rehab and appeared to have eventually made amends with some leaders of the Jewish community.<\/p>\n

He re-entered the designer world at least partly thanks to the help of Wintour, Vogue\u2019s former longtime editor-in-chief whose alleged over-the-top antics were immortalized in the 2006 Meryl Streep flick \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Wintour, who stepped down from her elite top role in 2025, helped Galliano continue to land work.<\/p>\n

In her statement Monday, she said, \u201cJohn\u2019s decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is. \u201cI believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Insiders at Vogue said the disaster was a long time in the making \u2014 and mainly Wintour\u2019s own fault, although fueled by yes-people lackeys.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is whispering behind her back, but nobody is saying anything to her face,\u2019\u2019 a source said. \u201cThey\u2019re all \u2018yes ma\u2019aming\u2019 her like they\u2019ve always done.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were definitely people who had concerns, but no one wanted to challenge her directly and now people are mortified by how this was handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jonathan Greenblatt of the ADL had breakfast with Max Hollein, CEO of the Met, a few weeks ago at the Regency Hotel, along with at least one board member of the Met, The Post is told.<\/p>\n

A source said, \u201cHe was urging them to reverse the decision on the Galliano show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a combination of things: donors, board members, the Julie Menin letter. But Jonathan was one of the loudest voices from the Jewish community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The situation has meanwhile led to some serious navel-gazing at the Met.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there will be reverberations for years,\u2019\u2019 a prominent donor said.\u201d It never should have even gotten to that point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council, agreed, saying, \u201cA man who declared, \u2018I love Hitler\u2019 and told people their families would be \u2018gassed.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAn exhibition honoring him. A gala on Yom HaShoah [Holocaust Remembrance Day]. In New York City. The Met isn\u2019t facing a scheduling problem,\u201d he said of concerns now over how to whip up another celebrant on such short notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s facing a judgment problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
