Anna Wintour\u2019s employees are allegedly \u201cmortified\u201d over the handling of the John Galliano Met Gala 2027 scandal.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is whispering behind [Anna\u2019s] back, but nobody is saying anything to her face,\u201d a Cond\u00e9 Nast insider exclusively told Page Six Monday. \u201cThey\u2019re all \u2018yes-ma\u2019aming\u2019 her like they\u2019ve always done.\u201d<\/p>\n

The source alleged that concerns about the controversial decision to honor Galliano were being discussed behind the scenes. However, we\u2019re told staffers were reluctant to challenge the famously powerful Met trustee \u2014 and Vogue\u2019s global editorial director \u2014 directly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how something like this gets this far in the first place. People are afraid of losing their jobs, so nobody wants to be the person who stands up and says, \u2018This is a bad idea,’\u201d the insider explained. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere were definitely people who had concerns, but no one wanted to challenge her directly, and now people are mortified by how this was handled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reps for Wintour and Cond\u00e9 Nast did not immediately respond to Page Six\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n

As Page Six previously reported, the backlash came to a head early Monday when Galliano, now 65, announced he was withdrawing from the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s planned 2027 \u201cJohn Galliano: Horizons\u201d exhibition following mounting criticism over his history of antisemitic and racist remarks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time,\u201d Galliano said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The former Dior designer added that he did not want the controversy surrounding him to \u201cplace the Met in a difficult position\u201d or distract from the work of its Costume Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Galliano also acknowledged that an exhibition honoring his career would be painful for some people \u2014 adding that he remains accountable for any previous hurt he caused the Jewish and Asian communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wintour supported Galliano and his decision, stating in her own statement (per the official Met Gala website), \u201cJohn\u2019s decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI believe this is the right decision, and both he and the Museum have my full support.\u201d<\/p>\n

The museum also said that details of a new exhibition will be announced \u201cat a later date.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the museum and Vogue announced plans to honor Galliano with an exhibition celebrating his career, despite the designer remaining a deeply polarizing figure following his infamous 2011 scandal.<\/p>\n

Galliano was fired from Dior after he was caught on video making antisemitic and racist remarks at a Paris caf\u00e9, including declaring, \u201cI love Hitler.\u201d He was later found guilty in France of public insults based on a person\u2019s origin and fined.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The planned tribute immediately drew scrutiny, particularly because the 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for the first Monday in May, which falls on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before the exhibition was announced, Wintour, 76, Galliano and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton had met New York City\u2019s \u201cinfluential rabbis and Jewish leaders\u201d in a bid to \u201cget their thoughts on the potential issues with next year\u2019s planned fashion extravaganza.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wintour had nevertheless been one of Galliano\u2019s most prominent defenders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano,\u201d she previously said in a statement. \u201cHis body of work \u2014 at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label and more\u2014combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light, the past, the present, the future all smashing together in a brilliant way.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cHe\u2019s a great designer and his career isn\u2019t defined by a moment\u2014something that he will live with for the rest of his life. The exhibition won\u2019t shy away from any of the darkness in John\u2019s past. It\u2019s part of what has shaped him. The show will take in the full arc of his career and grapple with all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
