Google Maps has changed the name of \u201cLake Ontario\u201d to \u201cLake America\u201d for US users to reflect President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order renaming the lake, according to \u200ba Google statement.<\/p>\n

Trump announced on Thursday that he was\u00a0changing the name\u00a0\u200cof the smallest of the five Great Lakes, part of an escalating trade feud with Canada that has prompted the two countries to impose reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars \u200bin goods.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s order affects the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which \u200bsets the standards for official US maps. It does not have \u2060any impact on Canadian naming conventions or how the rest of the \u200bworld refers to the lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in \u200bofficial government sources, which is GNIS for the US, people using Maps in the US will see \u2018Lake America,\u2019 those in Canada will continue to see \u2018Lake Ontario,\u2019 and those outside of the \u200bUS and Canada will see both names,\u201d Google said in a blog post \u200bissued on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The White House, Carney\u2019s office and Ford\u2019s office did not immediately comment on \u200cSunday \u2060on Google\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Google Maps made a similar change to the Gulf of Mexico last year, labeling it the \u201cGulf of America\u201d following Trump\u2019s executive order on his first day in office renaming the body of water.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately rejected \u200bthe lake\u2019s name \u200bchange on Thursday. \u2060Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, which shares a long border with Canada, declared that \u201cNew York won\u2019t be calling \u200bit that,\u201d while Phil Scott, the Republican governor of neighboring \u200bVermont, called \u2060Trump\u2019s decision \u201cpetty and disappointing\u201d on social media.<\/p>\n

The premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, on Saturday unveiled a large lakeside sign that reads, \u201cLake Ontario: Now and Always,\u201d in both English \u2060and \u200bFrench.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump can call it whatever he wants, \u200bbut I can tell you, the rest of the world will always call it Lake Ontario,\u201d Ford \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
