Two math nerds, plus a 20-year marriage without a prenup and an $80 billion hedge fund equals the largest divorce in New Jersey\u2019s history \u2014 and, potentially, the third-biggest of all time.<\/p>\n

The sensational split between billionaire financier John Overdeck and his estranged wife Laura Overdeck spilled into public view this month as it went to trial in New Jersey family court.<\/p>\n

John Overdeck, the 56-year-old founder of Manhattan-based investment firm Two Sigma, has been trying to avoid coughing up $6.2 billion that his soon-to-be ex-spouse contends he owes her in their bitter divorce.<\/p>\n

If Laura Overdeck successfully wins the astronomical sum, the couple\u2019s divorce would only fall behind those of Bill and Melinda Gates and Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott as the most expensive in US history.<\/p>\n

But John Overdeck is fighting his wife\u2019s claim that his stake in the hedge fund counts as a marital asset, testifying Wednesday he couldn\u2019t take the majority of credit for the firm\u2019s success.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He claimed she deserved a much smaller share than she was demanding \u2014 and that the approximately $600 million settlement he offered her should be enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura, I think, was alongside me for all of this, and I think it is fair that she received some amount of the appreciation, the net appreciation that occurred during the marriage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn reflection, I think that $600 million approximately is a fair amount of that appreciation for her to receive in final judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout their marriage, he claimed he was always \u201cprompt\u201d in sharing the fruits of his investment successes with his wife in a joint account, \u201cso much so that she was able to withdraw $75 million the day before she filed for divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe lived a comfortable life on that money,\u201d he told the court.<\/p>\n

The pair\u2019s long path to a nondescript Newark courtroom began more than two decades ago, with a romance that seemed so rock-solid they married with an announcement in the New York Times\u2019 wedding page \u2014 and without a prenuptial agreement.<\/p>\n

A preternatural math talent from Maryland, John Overdeck won the silver medal at the International Mathematics Olympiad when he was 16 and graduated from Stanford University at the tender age of 19.<\/p>\n

Overdeck soon delved into the hedge fund world, working with a young Jeff Bezos at DE Shaw & Co. He later described himself in court as \u201cJeff Bezos\u2019 shadow\u201d during the early days of Amazon.com.<\/p>\n

Laura Overdeck, a Princeton University and Wharton School graduate, likewise worked in the hedge fund world \u2014 and, after tying the knot, threw herself into philanthropy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Together, the couple founded the Overdeck Family Foundation focused on education in 2011. And Laura Overdeck parlayed her interest into her Bedtime Math nonprofit, producing acclaimed children\u2019s books and apps designed to help spark interest in mathematics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In private, the couple raised three children in a 6,000-square-foot Millburn, New Jersey, mansion.<\/p>\n

But the math whizzes\u2019 marriage didn\u2019t add up, court filings contend.<\/p>\n

Laura Overdeck filed for divorce in 2022, and alleged that John Overdeck plotted for years to get out of the marriage as close to scot-free as a billionaire without a prenup could.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He started laying the groundwork for a divorce just five years into their marriage, allegedly conspiring with the couple\u2019s lawyers to hide assets, court filings in a related lawsuit contend.<\/p>\n

The alleged covert turn toward splitsville coincided with Two Sigma\u2019s growth, with the hedge fund now worth roughly $80 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The central question in the divorce \u2014 and the ongoing trial \u2014 is whether Laura Overdeck can claim her husband\u2019s stake in Two Sigma as a marital asset.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She contends the firm, founded in 2000, was little more than a paper asset when they wed, while her erstwhile hubby argues it was already well established.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Laura Overdeck is seeking a 35% piece of John\u2019s stake in Two Sigma \u2014 which her lawyer pegs at $6.2 billion.<\/p>\n

John Overdeck allegedly offered a relative fraction of that eye-watering amount, but it certainly isn\u2019t chump change: $633 million, according to Laura Overdeck\u2019s lawyer Theresa Lyons.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Overdeck is trying to put the genie back in the bottle,\u201d Lyons said in court.<\/p>\n

The outcome could also impact the direction of Two Sigma, where John Overdeck had a bitter falling out with fellow co-founder David Siegel.<\/p>\n

The co-founders each own roughly half the firm and have been battling for control since 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A win by Laura Overdeck not only would net her an all-time divorce payout, but also potentially tip the precarious balance of power at Two Sigma into Siegel\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n

Beyond the rancorous conflict over cash, the divorce exposed sordid accusations against both John and Laura Overdeck.<\/p>\n

The hubby\u2019s fencing instructor gal pal sued Laura Overdeck for defamation \u2014 accusing her of insinuating that she ruined their marriage and calling her a criminal who \u2018threatens people with real knives,\u201d court papers reveal.<\/p>\n

The accusations dovetail with bizarre 2023 police body-camera footage depicting a woman ranting to cops at the Overdecks\u2019 mansion that John was \u201cjust using me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

John Overdeck admitted to cops he was \u201cdating\u201d the woman, but claimed they never had sex or even got naked in each other\u2019s company, the footage revealed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the uncomfortable scene progresses, Laura Overdeck drove up and told cops she wanted both John and the gal pal gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly, it\u2019s not even that complicated. He\u2019s got a psycho girlfriend, and he\u2019s got to get out. It\u2019s not that complicated. Like, I just want her to leave my kids alone,\u2019\u2019 the wife said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Laura Overdeck also didn\u2019t escape being sullied amid the divorce.<\/p>\n

Accusations that she hacked John Overdeck\u2019s computer, broke into his post office box and deleted evidence from her phone led a judge to bar her from taking the stand in the trial.<\/p>\n

That means the trial will hinge on Overdeck\u2019s ongoing testimony, which is set to resume next week.<\/p>\n

He argued that his wife\u2019s exposure to Two Sigma mostly involved attending holiday parties and when he handed out copies of her math-focused kids\u2019 book series in the office.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t manage money, make trades, investment decisions or hires for the firm, he testified Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, she did not,\u201d he repeatedly responded to questions about Laura Overdeck\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

The financier also spilled details on their now-bygone home life, recounting how his wife did the majority of parenting with the help of a full-time nanny and 15-hour-a-week housekeeper.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I was a fairly active dad for somebody who was working in the city,\u201d he testified.\u2029\u201dI coached all three of my kids in their sports teams, and I almost never worked on weekends and was typically at home and engaged with the family. But I don\u2019t want to take away from the fact that Laura certainly did more at home than I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
