Testimony in Lindsay Clancy\u2019s has wrapped up. Lawyers will spend today arguing over jury instructions before closing arguments on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff finished telling the jury in Plymouth, Mass., court what his evaluation was of the 36-year-old Duxbury mother and whether she should be found criminally responsible. He is testifying as the last prosecution rebuttal witness.<\/p>\n

Clancy \u2013 a former labor and delivery nurse \u2013 wants a jury to find her not guilty by reason of insanity based on claims she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis and hearing a voice telling her to kill herself and murder kids Cora, 5, Dawson, 3 and 8-month-old Callan.<\/p>\n

The jury was let go for the day and are set to return Thursday morning to hear closing arguments and jury instructions before they begin deliberating later in the day.<\/p>\n

Prosecution expert admits prosecutor’s opening statement ‘minimized’ what Lindsay Clancy went through<\/h2>\n

Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer just read an excerpt from prosecutor Shanan Buckingham’s opening statement and asked the prosecution expert if he thought the statement was true.<\/p>\n

“I think that statement that you read really minimizes what [Clancy] was going through,” answered forensic psychiatrist Dr. Gregory Saathoff.<\/p>\n

Saathoff was the last prosecution witness to be called in Clancy’s five-week trial before jurors are expected to start deliberating tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Here is the statement that Reddington read from Buckingham’s opening statement from July 27:<\/p>\n

“Lindsay made a calculated decision. She was a woman who no longer liked the life she thought she wanted. It was getting harder and harder for her to control and when she saw the opportunity to escape she made the selfish choice to take it and to take Cora, Dawson and Callan first before attempting to take her own life. She chose to manipulate her providers, seek out a quick and easy fix when she was feeling depressed and anxious and when she didn\u2019t get what she expected she chose the alternate route. She would seek a different doctor, she would change medications after days, she disengaged from treatment when she didn\u2019t like the plan. After only four months in treatment, she made a choice, a deliberate and intentional decision, that she did not want to try anymore and because no one could take care of her kids the way she wanted them to, she had to take them with her too.”<\/p>\n

Defense attorney questions psychiatrist about Lindsay Clancy’s memory during tense exchange<\/h2>\n

Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, questioned forensic psychiatrist about the killer mom’s memory during tense exchange.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gregory Saathoff previously testified about “inconsistencies” in Clancy’s account of the day she strangled her kids, suggesting it showed him she lied about hearing a voice telling her to carry out the horrific acts.<\/p>\n

“Can a person be in a state of psychosis and misremember something?” Reddington asked.<\/p>\n

“Yes,” Saathoff said.<\/p>\n

“Did Lindsay tell you that she slashed the screen with the knife before she went out window?” Reddington asked.<\/p>\n

“Yes, that\u2019s what she told me,” testified the psychiatrist — who evaluated Clancy in two days in May and June of this year.<\/p>\n

“But the screen wasn\u2019t slashed, was it,” Reddington said. “Do you think she was malingering or lying when she said that?”<\/p>\n

“No,” Saathoff said.<\/p>\n

Reddington seemed to be suggesting that any inconsistencies in Clancy’s telling of that events of that day were due to misremembering rather than lying about what happened to save herself.<\/p>\n

“One of the things you told the jury is you felt she was malingering or basically lying,” Reddington said. “She was making stuff up to make it look like she was crazy when she killed the kids.”<\/p>\n

“I didn\u2019t use those words,” the psychiatrist said.<\/p>\n

“No, you were a little more finesse than I was,” the defense attorney responded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
