Dolly Parton may have been known to the world as a country music icon, but to Miley Cyrus, she was simply \u201cDolly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cJolene\u201d singer shared an unbreakable bond with the former Disney star, as she became her godmother in 1992, when the actress was born. At the time, Miley\u2019s father, fellow country legend Billy Ray Cyrus, asked her to take on the honor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve known her since she was a baby,\u201d Parton \u2014 who died Tuesday at the age of 80 \u2014 said of Miley, now 33, during an interview with \u201cGood Morning America\u201d in 2009. \u201cHer father\u2019s a friend of mine. And when she was born, he said, \u2018You just have to be her godmother,\u2019 and I said, \u2018I accept.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton added, \u201cWe never did do a big ceremony, but I\u2019m so proud of her, love her and she\u2019s just like one of my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d singer and Billy Ray, now 65, met in 1992 when the latter toured with Parton following the success of his chart-topping hit, \u201cAchy Breaky Heart.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe just got to be good friends,\u201d Parton explained on the \u201cHoward Stern Show\u201d in 2024. \u201cHe\u2019s a Kentucky boy. I\u2019m from Tennessee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton further explained that she and Miley \u2014 who was born to Billy Ray and ex-wife Tish Cyrus on Nov. 23, 1992 \u2014 have \u201cstayed very, very close through the years.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if her goddaughter came to her for career advice at the time, Parton told host Howard Stern, \u201cWell, she\u2019s asked me a lot of things, and she mostly just runs things by me. And we talk. She\u2019s very successful. Miley is very smart. She\u2019s very intuitive about the business, and I just think Miley is a spectacular human being and an amazing talent.\u201d<\/p>\n

During that same interview, Parton also gushed about collaborating with Miley on her 2023 rock album \u201cRockstar\u201d \u2014 and covering the latter\u2019s 2013 track \u201cWrecking Ball\u201d on the record.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt honored,\u201d she said. \u201cI love that song, and I love Miley, and when I started to choose all these people for my record, or songs that I wanted to do, I thought, \u2018I have to have Miley.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo also worked together on Miley\u2019s 2017 track \u201cRainbowland,\u201d which was featured on her \u201cYounger Now\u201d album. Meanwhile, Miley made Parton\u2019s hit \u201cJolene\u201d her own during a \u201cBackyard Sessions\u201d performance in 2012.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Parton and Miley have shared the stage numerous times over the years.<\/p>\n

One of their first onstage duets was for the 2010 Hallmark special \u201cDolly Celebrates 25 Years of Dollywood,\u201d when they performed Parton\u2019s 1973 track \u201cJolene\u201d together. They also performed the classic song during an appearance on \u201cThe Voice\u201d in 2016, and again at the 2019 Grammy Awards.<\/p>\n

Miley and Parton later worked on a T-Mobile Super Bowl LVI commercial in 2022. The following year, the duo co-hosted\u00a0NBC\u2019s 2023 \u201cMiley\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve Party,\u201d which Parton\u00a0referred to as the \u201cthrill of [her] life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when we were rehearsing, Miley was crying,\u201d the \u201cSteel Magnolias\u201d star shared during a 2023 interview with Business Insider.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that we were singing so well together stirred up our emotions very much. Then we went into \u2018I Will Always Love You,\u2019 and she would just have these tears coming down and it was so emotional.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition to their musical performances, Parton also made several onscreen appearances as \u201cAunt Dolly\u201d on Miley\u2019s hit Disney show, \u201cHannah Montana,\u201d which aired from 2006 to 2011.<\/p>\n

Parton reflected on her time on the show in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just worked so great together \u2026 and thanks to her, I had a whole new following of people that were turned on to me,\u201d she said of Miley. \u201cThese young, little kids that were her fans, and kids that were fans of just the whole show, and the other little artists on the show, but here I am, Miley\u2019s fairy godmother.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, just a few months before Parton\u2019s death, Miley honored her beloved Disney character for the show\u2019s 20th anniversary special. While promoting the special, she revealed how her godmother influenced her to take a leap of faith and create something spectacular for fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my favorite pieces of advice [Dolly] ever gave me was, \u2018Start promoting something before it\u2019s real, because then as people get excited, it\u2019ll be easier to make it happen,’\u201d the \u201cFlowers\u201d songstress explained during her guest appearance on \u201cGood Morning America\u201d back in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I just started talking about \u2018Hanniversary\u2019 special before one even existed. And then I went to Disney and said, \u2018Look how excited everyone is about this, you know, imaginary \u2018Hanniversary.’\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2022, Miley also gushed over having the \u201cworld\u2019s best godmother,\u201d saying how she was \u201cpretty lucky\u201d to have Parton in her life during an appearance on \u201cLate Night with Seth Meyers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recalling her experiences working with Parton, the actress said, \u201cEvery time I coordinate and kind of communicate with Dolly, it\u2019s still through fax \u2026 She\u2019s rarely on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe does a fax, and then someone scans the fax, and they put it into a text message, and then that gets sent to me,\u201d Miley explained, before jokingly exposing Parton\u2019s other old-fashioned habits.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made me a demo one time, where she talks about being super high-tech, but it was all through a cassette, which she voice-memoed onto a flip phone, which someone then put on to an iPhone, which then got sent to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miley emphasized that while Parton had \u201ca phone,\u201d she simply didn\u2019t \u201cuse it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miley also recalled performing a rendition of Parton\u2019s 1997 song \u201cLight of a Clear Blue Morning\u201d while performing as a musical guest on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a fax. And she loved it,\u201d she told Seth Meyers at the time. \u201cShe loves when I introduce my fans to music in a way that\u2019s still me. Dolly doesn\u2019t want anyone to copy [and] paste \u2026 she wants them to infuse themselves into her music, cause that\u2019s what I think has made Dolly so loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cParty in the U.S.A.\u201d singer\u00a0also said at the time that she believed Parton was \u201cthe most loved person on the planet,\u201d adding, \u201cShe\u2019s left this big mark on the entire world, that all of us are just trying to fill her crystallized shoes, which is never going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton served as an honorary mother figure to Miley, with the \u201cMalibu\u201d singer telling W Magazine in 2024, \u201cDolly\u2019s been like a mother to me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I was just reading this fax that she sent me two Mother\u2019s Days ago,\u201d she continued. \u201cDolly wrote to me to say: \u2018How much do I love you? As much as my heart can hold and as far as my arms can reach.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gets me choked up,\u201d Miley emotionally shared. \u201cI just love her so much. Last Christmas, she gave me a whole mannequin, done in her proportions and wearing her outfit. It\u2019s so major.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Parton announced her ongoing health struggles last September, followed by various canceled appearances, Miley gave an update on her godmother during an interview with \u201cEntertainment Tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s always gonna keep the show going,\u201d Miley said in December 2025. \u201cThe show must go on. She\u2019s just excited to get back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton was still working leading up to her death on Aug. 25. Her last public appearance was back in June for the Dolly\u2019s Tennessean Travel Stop ribbon-cutting ceremony. The singer had also announced in July that she was working on the Broadway production of \u201cDolly: A True Original Musical.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Page Six reported earlier Tuesday, Parton was hospitalized for \u201ckidney and autoimmune issues\u201d at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville just days before her death at the age of 80. Her husband, Carl Dean, died in March 2025.<\/p>\n

While Miley has yet to address Parton\u2019s passing, Billy Ray penned a touching tribute via Instagram Tuesday, writing, \u201cI have so many moments and memories with Dolly, it\u2019s hard to know where to start.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cLike every little boy, I grew up loving Dolly Parton. She was a part of our lives, on our TV\u2019s, right in our living rooms,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOld Town Road\u201d crooner added, \u201cIn 1992, I\u2019ll never forget walking into her dressing room to apologize for all the tabloid stories which claimed I was having an affair with her. In true Dolly fashion, she just looked at me, winked and said, \u2018Honey, this trash sells records!’\u201d<\/p>\n

Billy Ray also vulnerably shared how he recently received a \u201cbeautiful message\u201d from Parton, saying how \u201cshe loved [him] with her whole heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will always love her in the same way,\u201d he added. \u201cWith my whole heart \u2026 and I always will.\u201d<\/p>\n
