Dolly Parton was always quick with a self-deprecating \u201cDollyism\u201d \u2014 but there\u2019s one that she repeated so many times, she figured it might go on her tombstone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt costs a lot of money to look this cheap,\u201d Parton, who died at 80 on Tuesday, famously said while starring in the 1982 movie, \u201cThe Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

The famous phrase became a Parton motto, and she told Vanity Fair in 2008 that that phrase would probably make it onto her epitaph, in addition to making \u201cseveral requisite cracks about her ample bust size.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her humor about her signature bottle-blonde bombshell look was born from Parton\u2019s early days growing up in rural Sevier County, Tennessee \u2013 and what she called a \u201ccountry girl\u2019s idea of glamor,\u201d she explained in a 2006 interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, cheap lookin\u2019, flashy lookin\u2019,\u201d Parton said about her style, before diving into a story about her hometown of Locust Ridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of patterned myself after what they called the town tramp in my hometown, when I was little,\u201d she told CBS \u201cThe Early Show\u201d anchor Julie Chen in 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was this woman that was very much a loose woman, but I didn\u2019t know what that meant and I just told her how beautiful she was, \u2019cause she had this beautiful yellow hair.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe left a big impression on me, and I would talk about how beautiful she was and different ones would say, \u2018Oh, she\u2019s just trash.\u2019 And I thought, \u2018That\u2019s what I want to be when I grow up. I\u2019m gonna be trash!\u2019 And that is how I look,\u201d Parton continued.<\/p>\n

Despite what critics said, Parton never felt ashamed of her \u201ctrashy\u201d persona throughout her life, she said during an appearance on the WorkLife Podcast with Adam Grant<\/em> in April 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody said, \u2018She\u2019s trash.\u2019 And in my little girl mind, I thought, \u2018Well, that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to be when I grow up.\u2019 It was really like a look I was after. I wasn\u2019t a natural beauty. So, I just like to look the way I look. I\u2019m so outgoing inside in my personality, that I need the way I look to match all of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another fan-favorite phrase from the musical icon included, \u201cIt\u2019s hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She also made light of her over-the-top beauty routines and her lengthy list of artificial cosmetic procedures over the years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say, \u2018How you stay looking so young?’\u201d Parton told BBC Newsnight in 2019. \u201cI say, \u2018Well, good lighting, good doctors and good makeup.’\u201d<\/p>\n

She later confessed in her autobiography, \u201cDolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business\u201d: \u201cI have nips and tucks and trims and sucks, boobs and waist and butt and such, eyes and chin and back again, pills and peels and other frills, and I\u2019ll never graduate from collagen.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, she told the Guardian in 2011, \u201cIf something is bagging, sagging or dragging, I\u2019ll tuck it, suck it or pluck it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like what I always say: I may look fake but I\u2019m real where it counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other classic Dollyisms were spotlighted during a David Letterman interview in 1995 about the country music star\u2019s biggest pet peeves.<\/p>\n

Among her hilarious answers were, \u201cTrying to play guitar in these five-inch fingernails,\u201d \u201cWhen the county declares my hair a fire hazard\u201d and \u201cRhinestone rash.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her biggest bugger? \u201cNobody notices I\u2019ve got a great ass, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton\u2019s lengthy list of cosmetic procedures reportedly included breast augmentation, a facelift and eyelift, liposuction and excess skin removal surgery. She also was a proud fan of fillers and Botox.<\/p>\n

However, \u201cYou\u2019ve just got to be very careful not to overdo it because you never know,\u201d Parton warned during an interview with Howard Stern in November 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
