Country music icon Dolly Parton has died. She was 80.<\/p>\n

Parton\u2019s nephew and her longtime head of security, Bryan Seaver, confirmed her passing in an Instagram post on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cHey everyone, my name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I am representing the Parton and Owne\u2019s family today, announcing the passing of my Aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,\u201d Seaver began. <\/p>\n

\u201cSister, sis Aunt Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,\u201d He continued. \u201cThis video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs her head of security, for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me,\u201d Seaver continued. \u201cI have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven\u2019t truly felt it until now. It is an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus. Surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens. I first went on the road as Dolly as a kid, getting a taste of the road life in the early 1980s. Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn\u2019t even know was possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton\u2019s tragic death comes after her husband, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82. <\/p>\n

\u201cCarl and I spent many wonderful years together,\u201d the late Grammy winner wrote in a heartbreaking statement at the time. \u201cWords can\u2019t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton also shared that she would be taking a brief step back from music because she couldn\u2019t \u201cafford the luxury\u201d of \u201cgetting emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n

Months later, in September 2025, Parton abruptly pulled out of an appearance at Dollywood in Tennessee due to health issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurns out there was an infection, and the doctor said, \u2018You don\u2019t need to be traveling around this minute, so you need a few days to get better,\u2019\u201d\u00a0she explained at the time, reassuring fans that she was fine. \u201cSo he suggested I not go to Dollywood today.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same month, she postponed her Las Vegas residency to undergo a \u201cfew procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton later gave an update to her fans, joking that she wasn\u2019t \u201cdead yet.\u201d However, she also skipped her 80th birthday celebration at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, in January 2026.<\/p>\n

In May of that same year, Parton officially canceled her Las Vegas residency, telling fans she was \u201cresponding really well to meds and treatments\u201d and \u201cimproving\u201d every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m doing really well, and [doctors] assure me that everything I have is treatable, so I\u2019m going with that,\u201d she added. \u201cI just want you to know I thank you for standing by me and that I will always love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton was born on Jan. 19, 1946, to parents Avie Lee Caroline and Robert Lee Parton Sr. in Pittman Center, Tennessee. She had 11 siblings: Willadeene, David, Coy, Robert Jr., Stella, Cassie, Randy, Larry, Floyd and twins Frieda and Rachel.<\/p>\n

The beginning of her life was far from glamorous as she grew up \u201cdirt poor\u201d with no running water.<\/p>\n

However, she was passionate about music from a young age \u2014 crediting her mother for influencing her musical abilities \u2014 and wrote her first song, \u201cLittle Tiny Tassel Top,\u201d at the age of 5.<\/p>\n

She began making appearances on local radio shows when she was 10 and performed at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time when she was 13, per Business Insider.<\/p>\n

The iconic country music venue is where she met Johnny Cash, who introduced her on stage. He helped kickstart her career and they developed a legendary, lifelong friendship over time.<\/p>\n

Still, the early days of her career were not easy. <\/p>\n

Parton at one point recalled having to sleep in a car while she was traveling on the road for performances.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy bedroom was the backseat and [my Uncle Bill Owens\u2019] was the front seat,\u201d the \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d singer said on \u201cShine On With Reese\u201d in 2018. \u201cI\u2019d wash my hair in the filling station bathrooms and put makeup on in the side mirror of the car, and that was just how you did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

After writing and recording songs for several years, she found breakthrough success in 1967, around the age of 21, when her singles \u201cDumb Blonde\u201d and \u201cSomething Fishy\u201d reached the Billboard country charts.<\/p>\n

Much of Parton\u2019s early success came as she collaborated with fellow country entertainer Porter Wagoner, whose syndicated show she had a regular spot on for years, between 1967 and 1974.<\/p>\n

That same year, she released her debut album, \u201cHello, I\u2019m Dolly,\u201d followed by several other chart-topping songs, including her 1970 track \u201cJoshua\u201d and her 1973 track \u201cJolene.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parton went on to release a plethora of other record-breaking hits over the years, including \u201cCoat of Many Colors\u201d (1971), \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d (1974) and \u201cIsland In the Stream\u201d with Kenny Rogers (1983).<\/p>\n

The country star took home the award for\u00a0Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1975 Country Music Association Awards, and she won her first Grammy, for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for \u201cHere You Come Again,\u201d in 1979.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Parton received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in June 1984, and was joined by actor Sylvester Stallone and her family for the big moment.`<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just so proud to be here,\u201d she said during her speech. \u201cIt\u2019s really been a big dream of mine to have my name and the walkway of the Stars. I want to welcome all of you out here and tell you what it really means to us because we\u2019re very proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd to have my star just a few feet away from [Sylvester Stallone] is one of the biggest dreams of my life. God bless you, thank you very much,\u201d Parton continued.<\/p>\n

Parton was later inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986 and opened her beloved Dollywood theme park that same year.<\/p>\n

Parton was also famously known to many, especially the younger generation, as the godmother to Disney alum and pop star Miley Cyrus. The two have continuously supported each other in the music industry over the years.<\/p>\n

In 2010, for example, Parton brought Cyrus on stage to perform \u201cJolene\u201d with her during the \u201cDolly Celebrates 25 Years of Dollywood\u201d Hallmark special. The duo also co-hosted\u00a0NBC\u2019s \u201cMiley\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve Party\u201d in 2023, where Parton gushed over the experience as the \u201cthrill of [her] life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cHannah Montana\u201d star referred to Parton as someone who had \u201calways\u201d been her \u201crole model\u201d in 2013. \u201cShe\u2019s a legend and unlike anyone I\u2019ve ever seen before,\u201d she added, per People.<\/p>\n

Cyrus also featured her godmother on her \u201cRainbowland\u201d track from her 2017 \u201cYounger Now\u201d album while Parton recorded a duet of Cyrus\u2019 song \u201cWrecking Ball\u201d for her 2023 \u201cRockstar\u201d album.<\/p>\n

Parton has notably inspired numerous artists in the music industry, including Whitney Houston, who recorded a cover of \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d for her 1992 film \u201cThe Bodyguard\u201d; Kelly Clarkson, who sang \u201c9 to 5\u201d with Parton in 2022; and Beyonc\u00e9, who recorded a version of \u201cJolene\u201d for her 2024 \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d album \u2014 to name a few.<\/p>\n

Parton previously talked about artists covering her songs and expressed her desire for Beyonc\u00e9 to re-record Jolene during an interview with \u201cThe Daily Show\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just love to hear \u2018Jolene\u2019 done in just a big way, kind of like how Whitney [Houston] did my \u2018I Will Always Love You,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSomeone that could take my little songs and make \u2019em like powerhouses. That would be a marvelous day in my life if she ever does \u2018Jolene.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, Clarkson honored Parton during her 2025 Las Vegas residency, telling the crowd, \u201cShe\u2019s just a beautiful human, she\u2019s so sweet,\u201d and recalling how the latter was \u201ckind to her\u201d during her early career.<\/p>\n

Outside of music, Parton was also an accomplished actress, starring in 1980\u2019s \u201c9 to 5\u201d (for which she also recorded her famous track of the same name) alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.<\/p>\n

In the Colin Higgins-directed film Parton, who portrays Doralee Rhodes, works alongside Fonda as Judy Bernly and Tomlin as Violet Newstead, to fight against their misogynistic boss and implement equal pay, flexible hours and on-site daycare.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still believe that women should get paid equal and should be treated with respect. I\u2019m all about that,\u201d she told ABC News in 2019. \u201cI don\u2019t get out and have to preach it or march in the streets; I write about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c9 to 5\u201d was Parton\u2019s movie debut and Fonda, who also produced the film, once shared that her co-star had memorized the whole script during an interview with Today in 1980.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s part,\u201d the \u201cKlute\u201d star shared, as Parton chimed in that she \u201cassumed\u201d she had to. <\/p>\n

Fonda shared that she pinged Parton for the role of Rhodes because the latter \u201cseemed like a great choice\u201d for the comedy.<\/p>\n

The \u201cComing Home\u201d star explained she was drawn to Parton because of \u201cher music, particularly the songs she writes,\u201d adding, \u201cShe\u2019s a great songwriter and the songs have a depth and humanity that made me feel like she could act.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, Parton starred in1982\u2019s \u201cThe Best Little Whorehouse in Texas\u201d with Burt Reynolds and the all-female ensemble for 1989\u2019s \u201cSteel Magnolias,\u201d featuring Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.<\/p>\n

Roberts opened up about the impact Parton had on her while working on the \u201cSteel Magnolias\u201d set, which was filmed in 100-degree weather in Louisiana.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cEverybody had ice on their wrists doing the whole thing,\u201d the \u201cPretty Woman\u201d star shared during a 1989 interview on \u201cThe Oprah Winfrey Show.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody was like, it\u2019s hot, could I get some water? And Dolly never said anything,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd I finally, I just had to say, \u2018Dolly, you\u2019ve got a wig, and the wool, I mean, c\u2019mon. It\u2019s hot, sweat a little. Just say, I\u2019m hot, you know? This is a drag.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Reflecting on what Parton said next, Roberts shared, \u201cI remember we were sitting on the porch, and she said to me, \u2018When I was a little girl, I wanted to be famous, and I wanted to be rich, and now I\u2019m both of these things, I\u2019m not going to complain about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cAnd I thought, \u2018Okay, I\u2019m going to be quiet for the rest of the day.\u2019 I\u2019ve never forgotten it,\u201d the actress continued. \u201cAnd every time I go to complain, or just kind of moan, I always hear Dolly sitting on the porch and saying that, and it kinda keeps you quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to her 11 total Grammys, Parton\u2019s many other accolades include a Primetime Emmy for 2020\u2019s \u201cDolly Parton\u2019s Christmas on the Square,\u201d an honorary Academy Award in 2025, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984, a National Medal of Arts in 2004 and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2006. <\/p>\n

Parton will also be remembered for her wit, leaving behind a collection of iconic one-liners, including \u201cIt costs a lot of money to look this cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled on the \u201cWorkLife with Adam Grant\u201d podcast in 2022 that she coined the famous line after being advised to change her hairstyle and the way she dressed.<\/p>\n

Parton reflected on being told that \u201cnobody was ever going to take [her] seriously,\u201d explaining, \u201cThe way I look and the way I looked then was a country girl\u2019s idea of glam, just like I wrote in my \u2018Backwoods Barbie\u2019 song.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople wanted me to change, they thought I looked cheap. But I patterned my look after the town tramp,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody said, \u2018She\u2019s trash.\u2019 And in my little girl mind, I thought, \u2018Well, that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to be when I grow up.\u2019 It was really like a look I was after. I wasn\u2019t a natural beauty. So, I just like to look the way I look. I\u2019m so outgoing inside in my personality, that I need the way I look to match all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside of her career in Hollywood, Parton was passionate about her philanthropy work, most prominently with her Imagination Library, which has seen the donation of more than 318 million books to children across the world since its founding in 1995.<\/p>\n

Though Parton never had any children with Dean, she leaves behind generations of fans and a massive catalog of memorable work to remember her by. We\u2019ll always love you, Dolly.<\/p>\n
