The United Arab Emirates halted all trade with Iran \u201cuntil further notice\u201d on Wednesday after accusing Tehran of firing ballistic missiles toward the country.<\/p>\n

The UAE imposed the punitive measure after two incoming ballistic missiles splashed down in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday night \u2014 triggering nationwide warnings and forcing residents to flee for safety for the first time in weeks.<\/p>\n

The Emirati Foreign Ministry then announced that the UAE will suspend all trade and financial transactions with Iran \u201cuntil further notice,\u201d while remaining committed to \u201cdialogue, cooperation, and regional integration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Iranian Foreign Ministry, however, denied that Iran had launched any such missiles toward the UAE, according to ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei. The UAE regularly came under intense fire from the Islamic Republic early in the conflict, <\/p>\n

The move further economically isolates Iran, which is already suffering under US sanctions and a blockade.<\/p>\n

Before the war, the UAE was one of Iran\u2019s biggest trade partners, providing more than 30% of its imports \u2014 valued at a whopping $21 billion \u2014 and acting as the destination for nearly 13% of the country\u2019s exports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UAE has been very important for Iran as a re-export hub and has helped the country absorb some of the shocks caused by sanctions,\u201d said Mohammad Farzanegan, a professor of Middle Eastern economics at Germany\u2019s University of Marburg.<\/p>\n

Farzanegan, however, said the embargo carries the risk of causing \u201csubstantial damage\u201d\u00a0to the UAE as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a relatively small country seeking to remain a regional hub for business and finance while attracting tourists and investors, the UAE depends heavily on regional stability,\u201d he said. \u201cAny major conflict with Iran can therefore cause substantial damage to its economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UAE and other nations in the region, including Kuwait and Bahrain, have condemned Iran for regularly attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz to maintain control over the critical waterway.<\/p>\n

The trade stop comes as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US would implement new measures to impose economic pressure on Iran through economic isolation and the blockade of Iranian ports.<\/p>\n

Iran already has a forecasted inflation of 70% this year and an economic contraction of 5.4% \u2014 as its rial currency has also plummeted to record lows, according to the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n
