Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s return to the UK is less a royal reconciliation than an \u201cadmission of failure,\u201d according to royal commentator Kinsey Schofield, who says the couple\u2019s decision proves they still \u201cneed the monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schofield exclusively told Page Six that she was stunned Harry and Meghan actually went through with plans to return, after years of publicly criticizing the institution they now apparently want to call home.<\/p>\n

\u201cA return to Britain is an admission of failure, whether Harry and Meghan are intellectually honest enough to admit it or not,\u201d she said. \u201cThey left Britain telling the world they needed freedom to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schofield further explained that the couple should not expect the royal treatment when they arrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot spend years insulting the establishment and then expect everyone to roll out the red carpet when California doesn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think these two had the audacity to actually do it,\u201d Schofield added, arguing that the couple has become \u201cdeeply unpopular\u201d in Britain while Harry continues to \u201cpick fights\u201d with the government and British justice system.<\/p>\n

One detail in particular is telling for Schofield: King Charles reportedly only learned about the move on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this were the product of some great royal reconciliation, you would expect the King to have been part of the conversation, not simply informed once the decision had been made,\u201d Schofield said.<\/p>\n

While Schofield acknowledges that \u201cHarry has clearly made progress with his father,\u201d she cautioned against conflating that relationship with his fractured relationship with older brother, Prince William.<\/p>\n
