Behold the human wreckage of the cult of diversity.<\/p>\n

The tragedy of Jason Arday\u00a0\u2014 the Cambridge professor found dead of apparent suicide amid an ugly plagiarism scandal \u2014 is that he was both built up and destroyed by the ruthless machinery of DEI.<\/p>\n

The academy made him into the golden boy of its philistine project of \u201cdecolonization\u201d and gave not one thought to what the consequences might be if his thin story unraveled, as it inevitably would.<\/p>\n

No one can deny it now: Wokeness makes false gods and real tragedies.<\/p>\n

Journalists found a story and they told it; it was the academy and Arday\u2019s colleagues who failed to do their jobs.<\/p>\n

The death of Arday is not only dreadful \u2014 it is enraging.<\/p>\n

It feels like a catastrophe foretold.<\/p>\n

Indeed, some of us wondered out loud if Arday had friends around him as the media storm over his alleged fabulism grew and went global.<\/p>\n

It was reckless in the extreme for the intellectual elites to fashion a new \u201cblack genius\u2019\u2019 and then say \u201cOops\u201d when his carefully curated legend started to fray at the seams.<\/p>\n

They condemned him with their fawning.<\/p>\n

This is the poison chalice of the state religion of diversity.<\/p>\n

It lays traps for the very people it celebrates.<\/p>\n

It hand-picks members of \u201cthe oppressed\u2019\u2019 for moral anointment and institutional gushing while leaving them open to exposure as others start to query their credentials.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the toxic bargain of identity politics: It builds teetering pedestals for ethnic-minority thinkers, meaning their fall from grace is often twice as fatal.<\/p>\n

And what a pedestal they made for Arday.<\/p>\n

They worshipped him as \u201cthe best in the world.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

They beatified him as a black wunderkind whose very presence in a place such as Cambridge\u00a0might help to wash away its sins of whiteness.<\/p>\n

They canonized him as a living monument to \u201cdecolonization.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was precisely this, their giddy, narcissistic desire to manufacture a kind of black savior, that made them turn a blind eye to the questionable elements of Arday\u2019s CV and life story.<\/p>\n

They sacrificed their due diligence to the god of decolonization.<\/p>\n

And Arday suffered, as both poster boy and sacrificial lamb of the diversity crusade.<\/p>\n

Even as he gained from it \u2014 reaching the dizzying heights of a Cambridge professorship \u2014 he was being damned by it.<\/p>\n

The foundation of myth and sand on which his starry career was built was untenable; its collapse was a given.<\/p>\n

It is a testament to the ideological blindness of the inhabitants of our ivory towers that none of them foresaw it.<\/p>\n

This is where we cut to the rancid heart of identity politics.<\/p>\n

I have seen it reported that some black thinkers had reservations about Arday, but they chose to keep them hidden.<\/p>\n

In other words, their devotion to the cult of diversity outweighed their concern for a friend in the grip of fabulism.<\/p>\n

Propping up the edifice of identitarianism mattered more than guarding a colleague from a coming tempest that was always going to be as fierce as it was predictable.<\/p>\n

They preferred to bask in the half-light of \u201cblack genius\u2019\u2019 rather than look out for a black colleague.<\/p>\n

The Faustian ruthlessness of it all is mind-blowing.<\/p>\n

Already, leftists are blaming the media for Arday\u2019s death: Hacks hounded him into despair, they say.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not having this.<\/p>\n

The media is the only institution in this entire tragic scandal that did its job properly \u2014 journalists found a story and told it.<\/p>\n

It was the academy and Arday\u2019s colleagues who failed to do their jobs.<\/p>\n

They failed to prize merit over identity, and failed to foresee the public embarrassment that would befall their falsely promoted friend.<\/p>\n

They ignored the truth \u2014 and the media found it.<\/p>\n

I and others have been arguing for years that the politics of identity is a disaster for all, black and white alike.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

White kids are overlooked; black kids are patronized.<\/p>\n

Whites are branded \u201cprivileged,\u2019\u2019 blacks as \u201coppressed.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Whites are seen as the beneficiaries of historic crimes who must atone for past sins, blacks as history\u2019s perma-victims who require the gracious helping hand of the state.<\/p>\n

We are all demonized or infantilized according to the accident of our race.<\/p>\n

Enough: Let our monument to Jason Arday be the restoration of the true ideal of equality.<\/p>\n

We couldn\u2019t save him, but we can save merit from the monstrous jaws of identity.<\/p>\n
