Super Bowl-winning Ravens linebacker O.J. Brigance died after a years-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the team announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

He was 56.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are devastated by the awful news that we have lost O.J. Brigance,\u201d Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said in a statement. \u201cO.J. was a beloved legend, mentor and man to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He was a vibrant person who became one of the first Ravens heroes with his passionate play, including the first tackle of Super Bowl 2001.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brigance\u2019s NFL star rose to prominence with the Dolphins, who signed him as a free agent out of Rice University in 1996. A two-time captain, he won the Ed Block Courage Award and the NFLPA\u2019s Unsung Hero Award in 1999.<\/p>\n

He then came to Baltimore \u2014 where he\u2019d won a Grey Cup with the CFL\u2019s Stallions in 1995 \u2014 for his lone season with the Ravens and played a key role in their march to the Super Bowl title, making a team-leading 10 special teams tackles against the Giants.<\/p>\n

He is the only player to win both a Grey Cup and Super Bowl in the same city.<\/p>\n

Brigance went on to play two seasons for the Rams before finishing his career with the Patriots in 2002.<\/p>\n

In 2004, he joined the Ravens\u2019 front office as a senior adviser for player engagement, a job he continued from a wheelchair with a communication device after he was diagnosed with ALS in 2007.<\/p>\n

Along with his wife, Chanda, he went on to found the Brigance Brigade Foundation, an organization whose mission is to \u201cequip, encourage and empower\u201d those afflicted with ALS.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile winning CFL and NFL championships are great personal remembrances, I wouldn\u2019t say any of these events define me,\u201d he said. \u201cRather, they are part of an accumulation of life events which catapulted me to do what God wanted me to accomplish. If you were to remove any of those events, I wouldn\u2019t be the same person or have the position of influence. With that being said, I consider the Brigance Brigade to be the most significant achievement of my life because of my ability to touch the lives of others.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The Ravens offered no shortage of tributes in Brigance\u2019s honor \u2014 several hailing his contributions to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am devastated and at a loss for words. O.J. was one of the most genuine, sincere people I have ever known,\u201d executive vice president Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. \u201cFrom the moment he arrived in Baltimore, you could feel his energy. His amazing smile, welcoming nature and infectious personality made everyone around him feel like family.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a hero to this city long before his courageous battle with ALS and became an even greater inspiration in the way he faced it with the same fight, faith and grace he brought to the football field.\u201d<\/p>\n
