Hayden Panettiere had shared candid details of the toll that addiction took on her health before her tragic death on Sunday at age 36.<\/p>\n

No official cause of death has been named for the \u201cNashville\u201d star, but in recent years, she reflected on her battle with addiction to alcohol and opioids.<\/p>\n

At one point, it grew so serious that she developed jaundice, a condition in which the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow due to poor liver function.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors told me my liver was going to give out,\u201d she told People in 2022, later elaborating in her memoir: \u201cA doctor told me that if I didn\u2019t stop drinking, I\u2019d be dead within five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere said the door to addiction was opened for her as a teenager, when someone on her team began giving her \u201chappy pills\u201d before red carpets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were to make me peppy during interviews,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She later started abusing alcohol after moving to Tennessee to star in the hit series \u201cNashville\u201d in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was being told how to be and how to live by so many people in my life,\u201d she told Women\u2019s Health UK in 2023. \u201cI wanted certain decisions to be my own, and nobody could stop me. What I put in my body was like an act of defiance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress, who battled postpartum depression, said that her drinking \u201cramped up\u201d following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never heard any stories about it at all,\u201d she told\u00a0E! News\u2019\u00a0The Rundown<\/em>\u00a0in 2023. \u201cI just thought there was something seriously wrong with me, so I thought, \u2018[Alcohol] will fix this. Duh!\u2019 And it didn\u2019t. It does for a moment, but then it made everything worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Compounding the problem, Panettiere was also prescribed opioids after an \u201cold neck injury flared up.\u201d She said she quickly developed a dependency on the pain pills and that her \u201ctolerance got so high, so fast, that it became a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress checked herself into rehab for the first time in 2015, saying she felt as if she was \u201cdrowning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, she later relapsed, saying that alcohol became a crutch that helped ease anxiety and the pressures of being in the public eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cI [also] struggled with sleep deprivation,\u201d she said. \u201cSleep is massive. It affects your motor skills, your ability to think, and your overall health.\u201d<\/p>\n

At her lowest point, she said, \u201cI would have the shakes when I woke up and could only function with sipping alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her issues progressed, and she started seeing the serious physical side effects following her 30th birthday in 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy body was like, \u2018Enough,’\u201d she confessed. \u201cI hit 30. My face was swollen. I had jaundice. My eyes were yellow. I had to go to a liver specialist. I was holding on to weight that wasn\u2019t normally there. My hair was thin and coming out in clumps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere sought further treatment, including an eight-month treatment program. It wasn\u2019t easy \u2014 especially going through withdrawal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs my nervous system tried to regulate itself without the depressant effects of alcohol, it went into overdrive, and my whole body shook,\u201d she recalled in her memoir, \u201cThis Is Me: A Reckoning,\u201d which was published earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce during withdrawal, I heard voices that were so terrifying I got on all fours and crawled to my bathroom, where I lay on the cool, clean tiles and waited for the panic to pass,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t sleep, and my head pounded like it was pressing against my skull.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, she said, she did \u201ca lot of work on myself\u201d during the program.<\/p>\n

On Sunday night, \u201cRemember the Titans\u201d star was found by a friend who told 911 that she was unconscious from an apparent cardiac arrest, according to police sources.<\/p>\n

The friend called 911 at 1:51 p.m. Sunday from a Greenville, SC, apartment to report an \u201cunresponsive female\u201d in \u201ccardiac arrest,\u201d TMZ reported.<\/p>\n

Responding paramedics tried to resuscitate her with \u201cadvanced cardiac life support,\u201d which can include breathing tubes, defibrillators, and emergency medication such as IV drugs. <\/p>\n
