WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump said Friday that he plans to declare the Strait of Hormuz \u201ca territory of the United States\u201d after the Iran war \u2014 as he again slammed US allies for not helping break Tehran\u2019s hold on the waterway.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated \u2014 pretty soon I\u2019ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,\u201d Trump said during a Long Island rally for Republican candidates in the gubernatorial and congressional elections.<\/p>\n

Trump acknowledged the economic effects of the nearly six-month conflict, but argued that ensuring Iran could not build a nuclear weapon was worth paying \u201ca tiny little bit more for your gasoline.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have to pay a little bit more, you\u2019re at $4. It\u2019s okay,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll never apologize. I did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s preliminary peace deal with Iran \u2014 signed June 17 \u2014 fell apart last month after Iran attempted to assert control over the strait, including by opening fire on commercial ships that used a US-approved sea lane along Oman\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n

The president previously floated in March renaming the waterway \u201cthe Strait of America\u201d \u2014 or even after himself \u2014 after European and Asian allies balked at launching a joint effort to secure the oil and gas bottleneck.<\/p>\n
