A taxpayer-funded swimming pool in Germany promoted an event \u201cexclusively\u201d for black people on Friday \u2014 sparking a torrent of outrage that forced it to be scrapped at the last minute by unapologetic organizers.<\/p>\n

The newly opened $346,000 public pool Volksbad \u2014 German for \u201cpeople\u2019s bath\u201d \u2014 was due to host the divisive summer event organized by the anti-discrimination charity Each One Teach One, the German outlet Bild reported.<\/p>\n

Swimmers were told the pool \u201cdoesn\u2019t open to the general public until 6:00 p.m [Friday]; before that, it is open exclusively to black communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

It sparked widespread disgust, but was only nixed late Thursday after organizers said they \u201creceived racist threatening emails and threats of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before that, the event at the pool next to the iconic theater the Volksb\u00fchne drew condemnation from politicians across the spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cApartheid as a model for Germany?\u201d Alice Weidel, the leader of Germany\u2019s far-right Alternative fur Deutschland party, said, sharing a photo of the pool\u2019s schedule before it was ripped up.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the tax-funded art project \u2018Volksbad\u2019 white people are temporarily denied access. What is this supposed to mean? Tax funds for such events should be cut immediately!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Volksbad is described as \u201copen to the public free of charge\u201d and for \u201canyone looking to cool off in the heart of the city,\u201d according to the city\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

Even more moderate politicians said the supposed anti-discrimination event made a mockery of the pool\u2019s name, which translates as the \u201cpeople\u2019s bath.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally I don\u2019t believe in categorizing by skin color,\u201d Christian Democratic Union pol Stefan Evers, who is the party\u2019s lead candidate in the Berlin state elections, told Bild.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI understood the \u2018people\u2019s swimming pool\u2019 as a swimming pool for all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI find it completely unacceptable that a theater heavily subsidized with public funds would misappropriate taxpayers\u2019 money for a swimming pool,\u201d said Alexander Krauss, the chief of the Berlin Taxpayers Federation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Around 300,000 euros were put aside to fund the 82-foot-long pool \u2013 which opened last Friday and will remain open until Oct.1<\/p>\n

The event was canceled late Thursday \u2014 and the pool will remain closed to all swimmers Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe aim was to organize a pleasant summer afternoon for the participating children and young people and their families,\u201d organizers at Each One Teach One said in a statement, announcing the cancelation.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the nationwide and often highly polemical media coverage, a climate has now developed in which we can no longer trust that the event will be a positive experience for the young people, nor that the physical and psychological safety of the children and teenagers can be guaranteed\u2026 not even by security forces and the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the public discussion about the event began, we have received racist threatening emails, threats of violence, and discriminatory comments on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volksb\u00fchne chiefs said the children could not be guaranteed a \u201crelaxing afternoon,\u201d while claiming the event was a \u201cpositive measure to promote structurally disadvantaged groups.\u201d<\/p>\n
