Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman vowed to repeal New York State\u2019s BitLicense regulatory framework if elected to the top job.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis should be the financial capital of the world,\u201d Blakeman said of New York at a press conference at PubKey, a Greenwich Village dive bar where you can pay with cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd without crypto, it is not the financial capital of the world,\u201d he slammed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Introduced in 2015, BitLicense is one of the strictest and most comprehensive crypto regulatory policies in the United States \u2014 with many critics arguing it creates significant barriers for companies looking to launch and grow in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If elected as New York governor, Blakeman said he would \u201cget rid\u201d of the strict digital currency framework. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to rethink how we can nurture this business and how we can have a close relationship between the private sector and the public sector on this important issue,\u201d Blakeman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Firms wanting to buy or sell digital currency in New York state require the license, which can cost upwards of $100,000, making it cost-prohibitive for many startups.<\/p>\n

The Nassau County Executive said prior approaches to Bitcoin and crypto treat it as the \u201cenemy\u201d \u2014 and slammed Governor Kathy Hochul for not understanding that she should have to work out her concerns with the digital currency.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, Kathy Hochul doesn\u2019t want to engage in any negotiation or dialogue. It\u2019s \u2018my way or the highway,\u2019 and that\u2019s how you chase business out of a state,\u201d Blakeman told The Post at the digital currency-friendly bar.<\/p>\n

Blakeman said he\u2019d be willing to sit down with cryptocurrency businesses to work \u201cout something that makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a tax on every transaction that takes place is oppressive,\u201d the gov-hopeful added.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt will end economic activity in the crypto space. So that\u2019s not something that works for crypto, and it\u2019s not going to work for government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blakeman, who doesn\u2019t currently own any cryptocurrency himself, said he hopes to invest in the digital currency one day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t afford it because I\u2019m a lowly public servant. So when it comes down a little bit, maybe I\u2019ll get some crypto,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s definitely something I\u2019ve been looking at.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s position on the digital currency remains unclear, Blakeman said he will \u201cstop\u201d Hizzoner if he \u201ctries to destroy the economy of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA governor has a lot of power over the mayor and the city of New York, and I will not let him destroy the greatest city in the world and a city that is very very important to all of New York State,\u201d Blakeman added.<\/p>\n
