A nurse practitioner who treated a \u201cmanic\u201d Lindsay Clancy\u00a0told a Massachusetts jury Tuesday\u00a0that she suspected the struggling mother had bipolar disorder \u2014 but never diagnosed her with it.<\/p>\n

On her \u201cworst day,\u201d Clancy told her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, and the NP that she had \u201cpersistent and intrusive thoughts of suicide\u201d just one month before strangling their three young children in January 2023.<\/p>\n

Clancy, 35, and her ex-husband\u00a0have separately sued doctors and hospitals\u00a0that treated her, claiming they\u00a0\u201covermedicated\u201d the anxious mother, and failed to diagnose Clancy with bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis \u2014 which the accused murderer says led her to kill Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in the basement of the family\u2019s Duxbury, Mass. home.<\/p>\n

The former labor and delivery nurse is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and faces life in prison without parole if convicted.<\/p>\n

The defense\u00a0argues Clancy is not criminally responsible\u00a0for their deaths and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.<\/p>\n

Renee Stonebridge, a medical examiner for Massachusetts, has begun testifying about her exams of certain body parts of Lindsay Clancy’s three kids.<\/p>\n

Stonebridge specializes in examining brains and other body parts of children when homicide is suspected.<\/p>\n

She looked at the eyes of Cora, 5, and Dawson, 3, and found hemorrhaging in both children. She also examined the brain, spine and eyes of 8-month-old Callan, finding he was asphyxiated.<\/p>\n

Clancy could be heard loudly crying with her hands covering her face.<\/p>\n

She also sobbed through the prior testimony of another ME who conducted the autopsy of Callan.<\/p>\n

Clancy strangled the three kids with elastic exercise bands.<\/p>\n

Lindsay Clancy called suicide hotline two times but was turned away both times, jurors learned.<\/p>\n

Clancy called the crisis hotline ASPIRE twice, including once over the weekend of Dec. 3 and 4, 2022, and both times was turned away.<\/p>\n

“Two times she contacted ASPIRE, not once. Both times they told her there was nothing they could do for her?” Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, asked counselor Latiesha Dukes.<\/p>\n

“Correct,” Dukes said.<\/p>\n

Clancy told Dukes — who wasn’t affiliated with the crisis hotline — during an appointment on Dec. 5 that she had a bad weekend with intrusive suicidal thoughts and she called the emergency number for help.<\/p>\n

ASPIRE told her there was nothing they could do to help her because she didn’t have any plans to act on her suicidal thoughts. <\/p>\n

“She had a difficult weekend, having intrusive thought that she wanted to die,” Dukes said earlier in her testimony during questioning by the prosecution. “She met with the clinician virtually and was told she did not meet the criteria for in-patient treatment due to not having suicidal ideation plan.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Counselor Latiesha Dukes confirmed that when she first met with Clancy on Dec. 2, 2022, Clancy reported her mental health struggles including having insomnia, anxiety, postpartum depression and thoughts of suicide at times.<\/p>\n

Clancy also told Dukes about her weight loss over the past month and her lack of sleep.<\/p>\n

“She constantly worried something bad was going to happen to her kids or something bad was going to happen to her baby,” Dukes said.<\/p>\n

Clancy said she was “having anxiety and numbness” and she cried during the appointment as she shared her issues, Dukes confirmed, referring to her notes from the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Counselor Latiesha Dukes said she recommended that Lindsay Clancy get a “higher level of care” at an outpatient program for postpartum moms.<\/p>\n

Dukes told Clancy about Women and Infants Hospital in Rhode Island during a Dec. 12, 2022 video therapy session — just weeks before Clancy killed her kids.<\/p>\n

“I was recommending this higher level of care because of continued passive suicidal ideation,” Dukes said, noting that Clancy told Dukes she’d called a crisis hotline the week prior.<\/p>\n

“Women and Infants was more for postpartum women and the infant would be able to come with her,” Dukes told the jury.<\/p>\n

Dukes only met with Clancy four times from Dec. 2 through Dec. 19. She said Clancy never expressed any plans to kill herself despite having thoughts about it.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the jury learned that Clancy went to Women and Infants on Dec. 20, 2022, but the facility turned her away, referring her instead to a general mental health facility like McLean Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

State trooper admits theory psychiatrist told Lindsay Clancy to lie about hearing voices was speculation<\/h2>\n

State Trooper Daniel Lawlor admitted it was just speculation that a psychiatrist told Lindsay Clancy to lie about hearing voices.<\/p>\n

“There is no investigative basis for that, that’s [State Trooper Joshua McKelligan’s] speculation, right?” said Kevin Reddington, Clancy’s defense attorney.<\/p>\n

“Correct,” Lawlor said.<\/p>\n

Lawlor had a conversation with lead investigator, McKelligan, in which McKelligan theorized that psychiatrist, Dr. Paul Zeizel, planted with Clancy that she heard voices as a defense strategy.<\/p>\n

Zeizel visited Clancy at the hospital and allowed her to use his phone to call her then-husband, Patrick Clancy. Clancy told Patrick during the call that she heard voices telling her to kill her kids.<\/p>\n

Lawlor admitted he didn’t hear any of Zeizel’s conversation with Clancy.<\/p>\n

Reddington has claimed Clancy shouldn’t be held responsible for the killings because she was in the throes of severe postpartum psychosis and heard a voice telling her to carry out the heinous acts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

State trooper says he discussed theory that psychiatrist told Lindsay Clancy to lie about hearing voices<\/h2>\n

Kevin Reddington questioned State Trooper Daniel Lawlor outside the presence of the jury about a conversation he had with the lead investigator about Lindsay Clancy’s case.<\/p>\n

Lawlor confirmed that he and lead investigator Trooper Joshua McKelligan discussed the theory that a psychiatrist who visited Clancy had the hospital allowed Clancy to use his cell phone to call her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, and tell him she heard voices telling her to kill her kids.<\/p>\n

Reddington obtained a court order for the psychiatrist, Dr. Paul Zeizel, to visit with Clancy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.<\/p>\n

“The prosecution determined that it was Zeizel that told [Clancy] to say [she heard voices] as some type of defense?” Reddington said.<\/p>\n

“I dont know what the prosecution determined,” Lawlor said.<\/p>\n

“The conversation also included the fact that it was the psychologist who planted that in her mind. That was the theory,” Reddington asked Lawlor of his discussion with McKelligan.<\/p>\n

“Correct. That\u2019s what was discussed,” Lawlor said.<\/p>\n

The judge called a brief break. The jury should be brought back in after for Lawlor to continue to be questioned by Reddington<\/p>\n
