Texan: Bipartisanship Should Still Matter<\/strong><\/p>\n

In choosing Ken Paxton, Texas Republicans rejected of \u201cthe establishment conservatism that [Sen. John] Cornyn represented\u201d \u2014 which should serve as \u201ca warning to observers about American politics,\u201d argues USA Today\u2019s Nicole Russell. The \u201cSenate race between Paxton and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in November\u201d neatly reflects \u201ctoday\u2019s polarized political climate,\u201d as the pair\u2019s only common ground is \u201ca talent for embodying the excesses of their respective parties.\u201d \u201cMaybe it\u2019s fitting that deeply flawed candidates from both parties are now facing off for a U.S. Senate seat\u201d: Polling shows that \u201cmost Americans are less polarized in their daily lives than the politicians who represent them,\u201d but they won\u2019t get \u201cservant-minded, strategic statesman\u201d until they \u201cstop rewarding outrage, performance and polarization over character and leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe digital revolution is remaking nearly every aspect of modern life,\u201d notes Ben Sasse at the Wall Street Journal, including leaving suburban American children \u201cweirdly held hostage indoors\u201d on their screens. Lawmakers have fretted about the Federal Reserve\u2019s independence under new Chairman Kevin Warsh, recalls Allison Schrager at City Journal, yet his predecessor, Jerome Powell, \u201cundermined\u201d that independence for years \u2014 by taking on \u201cpolitical objectives\u201d and expanding the \u201cscope of its balance sheet,\u201d the assets it owns. \u201cAny country that runs a large debt struggles to maintain an independent central bank, but that task becomes even harder\u201d with \u201ca large balance sheet,\u201d which enables higher government debt and so \u201ctempts policymakers to inflate away debt\u201d or \u201ckeep interest rates low in order to reduce debt-service payments.\u201d Yay: Warsh has \u201cexpressed a clear desire to shrink the balance sheet\u201d \u2014 a tricky task that \u201cmay do more for Fed independence than anything else in the last 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
