Mayor Zohran Mamdani got the cold shoulder from Rep. Adriano Espaillat \u2014 as Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch forced a smile during an awkward press appearance Friday, body language experts said.<\/p>\n

Espaillat \u2014 who lost\u00a0 the Democratic primary last month after Mamdani backed his far-left challenger \u2014 snubbed the mayor while taking the podium at an NYPD security briefing about the National Dominican Republic Day Parade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, commissioner,\u201d Espaillat said, warmly acknowledging Tisch, who was spotted putting her hand on his shoulder and exchanging a look with the outgoing congressman before the news conference started.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd thank you to the New York City Police Department. Chief Ramolez, Chief Rivera. I know them both, and I know the great work that they did both in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx,\u201d Espaillat said \u2014\u00a0while failing to mention Mamdani.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started my public service career as president of the 34th precinct community council back in the \u201980s, when crack ravaged northern Manhattan,\u201d Espaillat, the first Dominican American\u00a0politician in Congress,\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI know firsthand the great work that the police department has done, the men and women of the police department have done throughout the years.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old democratic socialist mayor\u2014 who wasn\u2019t yet alive in the 1980s \u2014 stood stiffly next to the 71-year-old five-term congressman with a strained smile.<\/p>\n

Espaillat\u00a0added that he was there to \u201cexpress my full support to the police department,\u201d\u00a0which Mamdani sharply criticized before taking office.<\/p>\n

As the two men crossed paths on stage, they did not make eye contact or acknowledge each other, experts said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth are trying to avoid each other.\u00a0 Mamdani looks down.\u00a0Espaillat doesn\u2019t try to engage him either,\u201d Body Language Expert and Behavior Analyst Traci Brown, who viewed footage of the interaction,\u00a0told The Post.<\/p>\n

Tisch, who has clashed with Mamdani over traditional policing measures, also stood awkwardly next to the mayor as he spoke at the briefing, experts said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s forcing her smile.\u00a0It\u2019s almost painful to watch,\u201d Brown said.\u00a0\u201cAnd I think it\u2019s unusual that she\u2019d stand in front of him.\u00a0 Everything is a message. She\u2019s trying not to connect [by] avoiding eye contact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist who also analyzed their interaction, said Mamdani\u2019s mood appeared to grow negative when Tisch began to speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she started to give her speech, Mamdani\u2019s mood changed \u2026 and then he zoned out in a frozen expression,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stood next to the podium with hands clasped,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

Last month, Espaillat\u00a0lost the Democratic primary for New York\u2019s 13th Congressional District to\u00a0Democratic Socialists of America member Darializa Avila Chevalier, 32, who Mamdani had endorsed.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u00a0called Chevalier \u201cthe champion we need for a city New Yorkers can actually afford.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the social justice protests of 2020, Mamdani criticized the NYPD on social media \u2014\u00a0calling the department \u201cracist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

He later dropped his stance on defunding the police and has avoided direct public criticism of the NYPD since taking office earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The National Dominican Republic Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday with an increased police presence.<\/p>\n
