The \u201cLioness\u201d star offered a rare glimpse into what it\u2019s like working with the prolific writer, director and producer, saying his standards challenge every actor who steps onto one of his sets.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo working with him is a challenge in the sense that he does raise the bar,\u201d Salda\u00f1a told\u00a0People magazine. \u201cAnd you have one of two choices. You either accept the challenge and make sure that you don\u2019t f\u2014 up\u2026 or you quit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I like being challenged,\u201d she added. \u201cI really do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salda\u00f1a\u2019s comments come as Sheridan continues to build one of\u00a0television\u2019s biggest entertainment empires\u00a0with hit series including \u201cYellowstone,\u201d \u201cLioness,\u201d \u201cLandman,\u201d \u201cTulsa King,\u201d \u201cMayor of Kingstown\u201d and the \u201cYellowstone\u201d prequels. His challenging scripts and hands-on approach have earned him a reputation for pushing actors to elevate their performances.<\/p>\n

For Salda\u00f1a, who stars as CIA operative Joe McNamara in Paramount+\u2019s \u201cLioness,\u201d those expectations begin long before cameras start rolling.<\/p>\n

Speaking recently with\u00a0USA TODAY, the Oscar-winning actress recalled Sheridan personally calling her ahead of season three to prepare her for the physically demanding role.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I definitely want you to build more muscle. I want Joe to be just a machine,’\u201d Salda\u00f1a told the outlet.<\/p>\n

The actress said she immediately hired a private trainer to help transform into the battle-hardened CIA operative before filming began.<\/p>\n

Sheridan\u2019s presence on set can also be intimidating.<\/p>\n

\u201cSheridan is an intimidating cat,\u201d Salda\u00f1a told USA TODAY. \u201cI\u2019m not going to lie. And he comes in so serious. It raises the bar for the rest of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his demanding reputation, Salda\u00f1a told People magazine the \u201cYellowstone\u201d creator is equally committed to collaborating with actors who come prepared.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s actually great,\u201d she said of working directly with Sheridan. \u201cWhen you work with him is when you realize how passionate he is about actors and about acting. I think it is his first love when it comes to the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s an incredibly smart person. He\u2019s very curious about government affairs, and he seeks out information and education based on that curiosity,\u201d Salda\u00f1a continued. \u201cAnd then he writes these incredibly elaborate shows that end up really educating us as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Salda\u00f1a,\u00a0Kidman\u00a0has become one of her closest collaborators on the series.<\/p>\n

The actresses told People they have developed a routine whenever Sheridan\u2019s complex scripts leave them searching for answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tag team finding out where Taylor is and seeing if he\u2019s going to call us back because, when we need him, it\u2019s always having to do with the work,\u201d Salda\u00f1a said.<\/p>\n

After spending \u201cfive or ten minutes\u201d catching up every morning, the pair head to hair and makeup before turning their attention to the day\u2019s scenes, often tracking Sheridan down between takes to discuss dialogue that \u201cdon\u2019t feel like they\u2019re making any sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Salda\u00f1a, that teamwork has become one of the highlights of making the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful because I respect her so much,\u201d she told People of Kidman. \u201cNicole\u2026 I admire her. She\u2019s an incredibly talented woman, but what she is first and foremost, what I love the most, is she\u2019s a mother. She\u2019s a daughter. She\u2019s a sister. She\u2019s a friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd she plays all of those roles beautifully,\u201d Salda\u00f1a continued. \u201cAnd she does it with so much love and unconditional support. That\u2019s admirable. So everything about working with Nicole has been true joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kidman returned the compliment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love her,\u201d the Oscar winner said. \u201cShe\u2019s just so fun, and she\u2019s so generous, and a girl\u2019s girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you get this kind of\u2026 we come into work, but then we have so many other things that we rely on,\u201d Kidman continued. \u201cSo the work is here, but then we have all this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actresses\u2019 partnership has become especially valuable because of Sheridan\u2019s military- and intelligence-heavy scripts, which require extensive preparation before filming.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Kidman revealed she relies on researchers to help her understand the show\u2019s dense CIA terminology.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe have to understand every single thing we\u2019re saying,\u201d Kidman previously told People. \u201cIt has to come trippingly off your tongue. You have to understand everything, and it has to be [like it\u2019s] something that you are using as everyday language all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

She previously compared preparing for the role to \u201csuddenly doing a thesis in the CIA,\u201d explaining that she, Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman regularly rehearse together while working through unfamiliar terminology before cameras roll.<\/p>\n

Salda\u00f1a has also spoken about the challenge of mastering Sheridan\u2019s dialogue, previously telling People that the role helped her confront both her dyslexia and anxiety because of the preparation required.<\/p>\n

Still, she said Sheridan\u2019s willingness to listen is what surprises her most.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I love collaborating with Taylor because I love his mind. I like his art. I like his writing. And I like playing roles that feel wholesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he knows that you care, when he knows where you\u2019re coming from, when you know exactly what it is that you want to talk about, he meets you where you\u2019re at,\u201d Salda\u00f1a told People. \u201cHe\u2019s very collaborative.\u201d<\/p>\n
