Sometimes a red scare isn\u2019t such a bad thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the last several weeks President Donald Trump has been issuing five-alarm-fire warnings claiming the Democratic Socialists of America\u00a0are really just communists \u2014 and his opponents have blasted him for the worst sort of McCarthyism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rhetoric has been blunderbuss and over-the-top, but the DSA does have a communist problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The DSA is a matryoshka doll of subversion: It is attempting to infiltrate and take over the Democratic Party (with some success), while Marxists are infiltrating and taking over the DSA (also with some success).<\/p>\n

In other words, the most important movement within the Democratic Party is in the process of falling under the control of communists.<\/p>\n

Over the last few years, they have established a majority on the DSA\u2019s National Political Committee,\u00a0its governing board.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As recent reports in The Atlantic warning about the direction of the DSA have noted, this is not in keeping with the original vision of the organization.<\/p>\n

The late Michael Harrington was the biggest founding figure of the DSA, and he was a genuinely democrat socialist.<\/p>\n

(The need for the adjective \u201cdemocratic\u201d before \u201csocialist\u201d stems from the fact that so many varieties of socialism are un<\/em>democratic.)<\/p>\n

A 20th-century intellectual and organizer, Harrington came to prominence with his 1962 book on poverty in the United States, \u201cThe Other America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrington\u2019s policy prescriptions may have been misbegotten, but he wasn\u2019t a hater with totalitarian tendencies or an opponent of Western civilization obsessed with destroying Israel \u2014 in fact, he was pro-Zionism.<\/p>\n

Harrington and similarly battle-hardened socialists of his generation had plenty of experience watching social organizations get penetrated and destroyed by Marxists-Leninists via the process that Trotskyites called \u201centryism.\u201d<\/p>\n

So they wrote a provision into the DSA\u2019s bylaws allowing for the expulsion of anyone \u201cunder the discipline of any self-defined democratic-centralist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, that measure has been repealed.<\/p>\n

Pro-Harrington members of the DSA formed a group called the North Star caucus to preserve his vision;\u00a0 the hard leftists countered with the Red Star caucus.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Members of Red Star wrote a dispatch a couple of years ago lamenting how the DSA was once upon a time \u201can anti-communist, Labor Zionist, social democratic organization,\u201d and calling on \u201call communists in the United States to join us in the democratic struggle within the DSA.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, they admitted, the DSA isn\u2019t perfect, but \u201cas communists contest for and win hegemony within the organization, we continue to move toward a revolutionary horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t bluster: The orientation of the DSA has changed in recent years.<\/p>\n

As far as an animating spirit, it\u2019s \u201cgoodbye, Michael Harrington\u201d and \u201chello, Hasan Piker\u201d \u2014 the left-wing influencer who thinks fondly of Chairman Mao and of anti-Israel terror groups.<\/p>\n

True to its new posture, the DSA refused to condemn Hamas after Oct. 7, and the New York City chapter promoted a pro-Hamas rally immediately after the attack.<\/p>\n

In response, about two dozen long-time members of the DSA, some of them former leaders, quit the group.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is time,\u201d they wrote, \u201cto find other organizational vehicles to advance an emancipatory, humane democratic socialism.\u201d (Good luck.)<\/p>\n

All this should matter.<\/p>\n

Like it or not, the DSA is not a fringe group with exotic concerns anymore, but a mainstream force nominating Democratic candidates across the country.<\/p>\n

As such, its internal politics deserve intense scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Needless to say, if Republican candidates were pledging fealty to a group increasingly subject to the control of self-professed fascists, it\u2019d be an enormous story \u2014 and they\u2019d have to disavow their association.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That there isn\u2019t such pressure on DSA candidates from the legacy media is testament to how any warning about domestic communism is discounted as groundless alarmism, and how communism \u2014 a supposedly idealistic force \u2014 doesn\u2019t carry the same malodor as fascism. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The Democratic Party isn\u2019t about to become a vehicle for communism, but the DSA \u2014 the cradle of so many new, attention-getting Democratic candidates \u2014 is well on its way.\u00a0<\/p>\n
