\u201c60 Minutes\u201d executive producer Nick Bilton reportedly gave staffers a stern talking-to about leaks \u2013 in a memo that itself got leaked \u2013 while incoming correspondent Sir Trevor Phillips warned that CBS News boss Bari Weiss might \u201ccrash and burn,\u201d according to reports this week.<\/p>\n

Former tech journo Bilton, 49, has reportedly been openly griping about office politics as his tenure gets off to a bumpy start \u2013 and now he\u2019s grown fed-up with the unrelenting leaks from network insiders.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, he reportedly sent the storied newsmagazine\u2019s staffers a 734-word missive urging them to come to him with any questions about newsroom rumors \u2013 effectively asking them to stop speaking to the media, instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince I started here there has been roughly a rumor a day,\u201d Bilton griped in the memo, which was leaked to Status newsletter. \u201cAbout me, about you, about what\u2019s coming next \u2013 95 percent of them are fabrications and blatantly incorrect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI no longer have the time or the patience for them, and I\u2019d rather we spend that energy on the stories,\u201d Bilton continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you hear something and it matters to you, come ask me and I\u2019ll tell you what I know,\u201d he added. \u201cOtherwise I\u2019d like this place to be talked about for what we put on television.\u201d<\/p>\n

Days later, Sir Trevor Phillips \u2013 one of the network\u2019s newest hires, who will serve as senior global affairs correspondent for CBS News and an anchor on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d \u2013 gave a blunt assessment of Weiss, who took the helm at the network in October.<\/p>\n

\u201cBari and her team have a huge tanker of a network news organization to turn around, and they are assembling a little team on the bridge,\u201d Phillips told the Daily Telegraph.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing about her is that she\u2019s one of those people who will either change the world or crash and burn. But when they crash and burn, it\u2019s in technicolor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Phillips \u2013 who previously hosted a morning news show on Sky News and in 2022 was knighted for his human rights work \u2013 also said it would be a mistake to focus on Weiss as an \u201canti-woke\u201d journalist, something she has often been called after speaking out against \u201cwoke\u201d culture.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the US, the controversy has been framed as, \u2018CBS News is becoming anti-woke.\u2019 But that\u2019s not what Bari is about,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has her own views, some of which I\u2019m sympathetic to, some of which I\u2019m not, but her point is that the media should be heterodox. There should be a variety of voices,\u201d said the journo, who is slated to move across the pond this summer to start his new role at CBS in New York.<\/p>\n

Phillips refused to comment on reports that Weiss had removed Holly Williams, a veteran reporter at the network\u2019s London bureau, from a planned interview with Nigel Farage and given it to Phillips instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said interviews with politicians like Farage will be a part of his coverage.<\/p>\n

It was a tumultuous season for the network over the past year, as many observers viewed Weiss\u2019 hiring by Paramount boss David Ellison as an attempt to add more conservative voices to the network as it faced backlash from President Trump.<\/p>\n

Then in early June, Bilton and Weiss fired longtime \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent Scott Pelley after he reportedly confronted Bilton during his first meeting with staffers, telling him he had \u201cslender qualifications\u201d for the job and that Weiss was \u201cmurdering\u201d the show.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

But in his memo sent over the weekend, Bilton appeared confident about the upcoming 59th season of \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d set to premiere Sept. 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s already in the works is extraordinary,\u201d he told staffers, adding that the team is \u201cthe best in the business\u201d and should be \u201cproud and excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor 58 seasons this show has come back in the fall and made people stop what they were doing to watch the greatest team in journalism hold power to account, take them somewhere they\u2019ve never been before, and question people the way few others know how to,\u201d Bilton wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n
