If The Onion or the Babylon Bee wanted to spoof the absurdity of DEI \u2014 the woke ideology of \u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d \u2014 they couldn\u2019t have invented a character as unbelievable as Jason Arday.<\/p>\n

But Arday is very real: Born in 1985, in 2023 he became the youngest black man ever to hold a professorship at Cambridge University.<\/p>\n

Naturally, he had to overcome great adversity to do so.<\/p>\n

Really<\/em> great adversity \u2014 because Arday, the son of a Ghanaian immigrant to London, isn\u2019t just black, he\u2019s autistic and was nonverbal until the age of 11, according to the glowing media profiles he\u2019s received.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s epileptic, yet that didn\u2019t stop him from \u201crunning 30 marathons in just 35 days,\u201d as reported in Britain\u2019s Independent.<\/em><\/p>\n

Indeed, he\u2019s a sports hero: The University of Bath even posted a blog on the \u201cInternational Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination\u201d in 2021 presenting Arday\u2019s claim that as a child he\u2019d played both soccer and snooker (similar to billiards) at a professional level.<\/p>\n

Though last week, the university amended the transcript of Arday\u2019s conversation to say he\u2019d only played soccer \u201csemi professionally\u201d and was \u201creally good\u201d but \u201cnot good enough to be professional\u201d at snooker.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

But never mind: He has so many other claims to fame that correcting that little misstatement takes very little away.<\/p>\n

After all, Arday was also<\/em> a star of the most famous documentary in British history, Michael Apted\u2019s \u201cSeven Up\u201d series, which starting in 1964 followed the same group of subjects from childhood to old age at seven-year intervals.<\/p>\n

Starting, that is, 21 years before the professor was born.<\/p>\n

No, the series didn\u2019t add new participants over time \u2014 its whole point was to track the very same people who took part in the first installment.<\/p>\n

Truly, thanks to DEI anything is possible.<\/p>\n

Arday now says that when he made the claim in 2022 (\u201cI was part of a program, actually, which . . . was called \u2018Seven Up\u2019 . . . basically when they follow you over the duration of your life, so they follow you at 7, 14, 21\u201d) he was talking about a totally different \u201cSeven Up\u201d documentary.<\/p>\n

As with so much else in Arday\u2019s almost superhuman biography, evidence for this, other than the professor\u2019s say-so, is curiously lacking.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s much, much more to Arday\u2019s story \u2014 the brain tumor he overcame while completing his PhD, the 600 miles he ran in six days on a treadmill, the millions of pounds he\u2019s raised for charity . . .<\/p>\n

A miraculous individual like Arday might never even have been admitted as a student at Cambridge, let alone made \u201cprofessor of the sociology of education,\u201d if not for the spirit of affirmative action.<\/p>\n

Yet now he\u2019s facing accusations of plagiarism because more than 100 passages in his dissertation appear to be lifted from another academic\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He insists he\u2019s a victim of racism and insufficient<\/em> DEI \u2014 as the BBC notes: \u201cArday did not dispute the allegations of plagiarism, but defended himself by arguing that he had not received adequate supervision during his PhD given his autism and learning disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even the left-wing Guardian newspaper found Arday a mite less than truthful, when he claimed a campaign to get him fired from Cambridge included a man threatening him with a knife (the school\u2019s video system showed no man and no knife) and a severed pig\u2019s head sent anonymously to his parents (London butchers and police had no records to support Arday\u2019s claim).<\/p>\n

When the paper asked Arday about his tale after trying to fact-check it, he said, \u201cTo be honest with you, I thought you\u2019d just believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trouble is, too many in the media and the academy have been believing Arday all along.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a poster child for the suspension of disbelief DEI requires of its advocates on both sides of the Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a comical story when it\u2019s just about a professor of the sociology of education, even one at a university as prestigious as Cambridge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s no joke when DEI madness spreads from sociology or education departments to every other corner of the academy, including law and medical schools \u2014 and from there into the legal system and hospitals.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no limit to how far DEI will go if left unchecked: It finds nothing too ridiculous to be laughed out of consideration.<\/p>\n

If Jason Arday decided to call himself an airline pilot, who\u2019s going to keep him out of the cockpit?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Honest and competent minority scholars wind up under suspicion when DEI lowers standards for everyone who fits the right racial profile.<\/p>\n

Yet by fueling such suspicion, DEI creates a market for itself, as its purveyors claim only affirmative action can overcome the public\u2019s doubts.<\/p>\n

Professor Arday deserves his fame in one respect, at least: His tall tales reveal the appalling truth about DEI.<\/p>\n
