                                        {"id":6079,"date":"2026-08-03T21:37:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T21:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=6079"},"modified":"2026-08-03T21:37:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T21:37:42","slug":"trumps-path-to-reopening-the-strait-of-hormuz-may-run-through-oman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=6079","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s path to reopening the Strait of Hormuz may run through Oman"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Iran says it isn\u2019t negotiating with the United States \u2014 but it is talking to another country that could deliver one of President Trump\u2019s biggest foreign policy goals: reopening the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=6077\">Mets send Clay Holmes, Tyrone Taylor to Cubs in massive trade<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Tehran publicly rejected Trump\u2019s Sunday claim that US-Iran talks are underway, Iranian officials said they\u2019re in intensive negotiations with neighboring Oman over the future of the narrow shipping lane that carries roughly one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and has become the biggest flashpoint in the escalating standoff.<\/p>\n<p>If Muscat can broker a deal, the president could get the world\u2019s most important shipping lane reopened without ever sitting down directly with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed Monday that Tehran\u2019s negotiations with Oman are focused on restoring commercial shipping through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid any misunderstanding, it is important to clarify what the current negotiations are about and who they are with. We are not negotiating with the United States at this time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur negotiations are with Oman and are focused on reaching an understanding on a route that will ensure the safe passage of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But even if a deal is reached, Iran says it would only be temporary unless what it calls US \u201caggression\u201d ends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as the US mischief continues, as long as the Iranian sea siege continues, as long as the US military aggression against Iran and its allies continues, there will be no [permanent] change in \u2026 Hormuz,\u201d Baghaei said.<\/p>\n<p>But reaching even a temporary agreement Iran would accept could prove challenging, as Oman has sided repeatedly with the US that the waterway should be open to all.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Iranian and Omani negotiators have been working toward an arrangement to restart commercial shipping, although major disagreements remain over transit fees and the rules governing passage. A US official told the paper Washington remains closely engaged with mediators despite the indirect format.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/metrotransitreview.com\/?p=6075\">Iran denies Trump claim new peace talks planned after US calls off attack<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a July 14 statement, Oman\u2019s Foreign Ministry described its role as \u201ctransparent and neutral cooperation with all parties\u201d aimed at restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait while complying with international maritime law.<\/p>\n<p>The latest discussions come after Oman and Iran in June created a joint working group to negotiate navigation, shipping services and the future management of the Strait, pledging to keep the waterway \u201ca secure and open\u201d route for international shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest obstacle now appears to be control of the shipping lanes.<\/p>\n<p>According to Baghaei, Oman has rejected Iran\u2019s preferred proposal to reduce commercial traffic to a single inbound and outbound corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [issue] in Hormuz has not been solved due to the disagreement between Iran and Oman,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe negotiations were based on the fact that the southern route passes through the waters of Oman, and the northern route passes through the waters of Iran, and it will be transformed into an intermediate route that will provide for the interests of both coastal governments,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we are now talking about a corridor that will have a return route and not a two or three-way route.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>His remarks came after Trump on Sunday said he had called off planned military strikes after hearing Iran wanted negotiations, telling reporters talks would resume Monday afternoon.
