Teen depression is common and treatable, and with the right support, many families navigate it successfully.

Here’s why teens can become so moody, how parents can tell the difference between typical teen angst and signs of depression, and what steps they can take to help.

Why teens suddenly get so moody

There are several reasons your once-cheerful child may suddenly seem like they are riding an emotional rollercoaster.

For starters, the teenage brain is still under construction. During adolescence, the regions responsible for emotions develop faster than the prefrontal cortex, which helps with impulse control, decision-making and self-regulation.

The result? Bigger feelings and fewer tools to manage them.

Fluctuating hormones add another layer, contributing to mood swings, sleep disruptions and physical changes that can leave teens feeling out of sorts.

Social pressures also intensify during adolescence. As teens work to figure out who they are, they often begin seeking more independence from their parents and turning to friends for validation and support. At the same time, peer pressure, social comparison and the desire to fit in can make everyday challenges feel more intense.

Taken together, these biological and social shifts can make the teen years an emotionally turbulent time — even for otherwise healthy young people.

Signs it’s more than typical teen angst

Not every moody teen is depressed, but there are important warning signs that can help parents tell the differentiate between typical teenage behavior and something more serious.

In general, moodiness tends to be short-lived and tied to a specific trigger, such as a fight with a friend, a disappointing grade or an argument at home. It may show up as eye rolls, slammed doors or a reluctance to join the family for dinner.

While frustrating, those behaviors typically don’t interfere with a teen’s ability to go to school, socialize or participate in activities they enjoy.

Depression, meanwhile, is more persistent and can affect a teen’s ability to function in everyday life.

It can also look very different in young people than it does in adults. Instead of appearing sad, a teen may seem unusually irritable, withdrawn or easily overwhelmed. They may also develop new, unexplained physical symptoms.

Read more NYC under flash flood warning as city could be soaked by up to 2 inches of rain per hour

One teen, for example, may have a noticeably shorter fuse that lasts for weeks or months. Another may begin complaining of frequent headaches or stomachaches with no clear cause.

Others may turn inward. A teen who was once outgoing and socially engaged may start spending more time alone, pulling away from friends, family and hobbies they used to enjoy.

How parents can help a teen who may be depressed

The first step is opening a dialogue.

Many parents instinctively turn to reassurance or tough love — telling their teen to “snap out of it” or that they have “nothing to be sad about.” But a nonjudgmental approach is far more likely to get them talking.

Instead, lead with curiosity. Try something like: “I’ve noticed you’ve been spending less time with your friends. I just want to understand what’s going on.” The goal is to understand, not to correct.

And remember: Even if teens act like they don’t want to talk, many still crave strong connection and guidance from the adults in their lives. Creating a space where they feel safe opening up can make a real difference.

From there, support can take different forms. Some teens experience milder episodes of depression that improve over time, while others may need more structured care. Either way, there is no shame in seeking help.

Many adolescents benefit from talk therapy, which gives them space to process emotions and build coping skills, including how to challenge negative thought patterns and navigate stressful situations more effectively.

If symptoms are more severe — or if a teen is too overwhelmed to engage in therapy — medication may also become part of the conversation with a clinician.

If you are worried your teen may be thinking about suicide, take it seriously.

Warning signs can include statements like “life is not worth living” or “I don’t want to wake up.” Don’t be afraid to ask directly about suicidal thoughts — asking does not increase risk or “put ideas” in their head.

And if there are any immediate concerns about their safety, don’t hesitate to seek urgent help or go to the emergency room.

Families who are worried about a teen’s mental health do not have to navigate it alone. The Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, offers expert evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.

If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts or are experiencing a mental health crisis and live in New York City, you can call 1-888-NYC-WELL for free and confidential crisis counseling.
