Colorado Democratic congressional nominee Melat Kiros brushed aside concerns about communists inside the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faction of the Democratic Party on Friday, arguing Republicans were using the issue to blunt the socialist movement\u2019s growing influence ahead of the midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Host Margaret Hoover of PBS\u2019s \u201cFiring Line,\u201d asked Kiros how she addressed criticism that some DSA members, including roughly half of its national leadership, identify as communists.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. Well, some members of the\u00a0Democratic Party\u00a0are proudly proclaiming themselves as capitalists, and it\u2019s a big tent, right?\u201d Kiros said. \u201cBut again, at the end of the day, it\u2019s up to the voters, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil a self-proclaimed communist actually wins an election, then it\u2019s just noise from the\u00a0Republican Party. There\u2019s no one who\u2019s actually winning with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoover asked Kiros directly whether she was a communist after citing President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0characterization of the movement as \u201chardcore, godless communists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I\u2019m not a communist,\u201d Kiros said.<\/p>\n

Kiros attributed the Republican attacks to concern that the DSA\u2019s economic message was gaining support among voters.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I think the Republican Party, and frankly, the oligarchy that largely stands behind the Republican Party can see that our message of, in its most basic form, economic populism, is actually resonating with voters,\u201d Kiros said.<\/p>\n

Kiros, 29, defeated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary for Colorado\u2019s heavily Democratic 1st Congressional District. Kiros has become\u00a0the 28th candidate endorsed\u00a0by a far-left group to win a Democratic primary election this cycle. Those nominees could join 18 incumbent progressives to form a 43-member House bloc in January.<\/p>\n

The DSA\u2019s\u00a025-member National Political Committee\u00a0serves as the organization\u2019s primary political leadership. The group\u2019s newly launched \u201cWorkers Deserve More\u201d program calls for abolishing the Senate, replacing the president and Supreme Court with institutions selected by Congress, granting amnesty to all illegal immigrants and defunding the Department of War.<\/p>\n

Kiros said members did not necessarily support every plank approved by the organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur platform is one that is voted on in a democratic way through our members. And it\u2019s one where it is almost certain that not every single member actually agrees with the entirety of the platform,\u201d Kiros said.<\/p>\n

Hoover noted parts of the DSA platform that Kiros believed in, including \u201cMedicare-for-all,\u201d universal childcare, while confirming Kiros rejected other parts such as abolishing the Senate, withdrawing from NATO and defunding the police. Kiros also said that she supported a 32-hour workweek, among several other issues.<\/p>\n

Kiros also defended her political philosophy of socialism after Hoover cited Democratic criticism of the DSA.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocialism\u00a0has proven to deliver on the values of the Declaration of Independence more than capitalism has,\u201d Kiros said.<\/p>\n

Kiros has also faced opposition over\u00a0her positions on Israel. Denver Jewish leaders told Fox News Digital that her rhetoric had heightened their safety concerns, citing her initial refusal to characterize the 2025 Boulder firebombing as antisemitic and her accusations that Israel committed genocide and apartheid.<\/p>\n

While the DSA continues to gain traction and popularity as new figures arise to leadership, such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Darializa Avila Chevalier \u2014 who recently won the Democratic primary in New York\u2019s 13th Congressional District \u2014 and others, a\u00a0July Fox News poll\u00a0found that 56% of registered voters still viewed the Democratic Socialists of America unfavorably, while 31% viewed the organization favorably.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The poll found that among Democrats, 59% had a favorable opinion of the DSA and 26% viewed it unfavorably.<\/p>\n

Fox News Digital reached out to the RNC, Kiros and the DSA for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.<\/p>\n
