ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE \u2013 President Trump announced new talks with Tehran will begin Monday after he called off a \u201cmassive\u201d attack on Iran that had been planned for this weekend.<\/p>\n

Appeals from several Gulf state allies \u2014 along with Iran itself \u2014 led Trump to stand down, he said. Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud spoke privately with the president on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was asked to by Saudi Arabia, by UAE, by Qatar, and by Iran,\u201d he told reporters aboard Air Force One Sunday when asked why he scrapped the plan to strike Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all set to go,\u201d he said, adding it would have been a \u201cmassive attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the Saudi crown prince reassured him that Iran was ready to make a deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey thought that a deal is imminent,\u201d Trump said, noting it would include the Strait of Hormuz and on Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has been clear he wants the strait \u2014 a critical waterway for global trade and oil shipments \u2014 open and free of tolls. They also want Tehran not to be able to access nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

Trump was circumspect on whether a deal could be reached with the Iranians \u2013 negotiations between the warring countries have routinely fallen apart over internal factions within the regime reportedly at odds \u2013 when talks begin again Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of times they\u2019ll say that to me, and then they\u2019ll go out and say we don\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He wouldn\u2019t give a deadline for reaching an agreement but assured that the US military is ready to strike at any time.<\/p>\n
