The 16-year-old California rookie lifeguard whose daring ocean rescue captured national attention is revealing what was racing through his mind as he fought towering waves to save a drowning 10-year-old boy.<\/p>\n

Ryder Williams became an overnight hero after pulling Nathaniel Rai from the pounding surf at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz on July 25 \u2014 a dramatic rescue that later earned praise from President Trump, who announced the teen will receive a high civilian honor.<\/p>\n

Now, Williams is opening up about the terrifying moments when he realized the child\u2019s life was slipping away.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I grab the child, he goes limp, so I\u2019m thinking about if he\u2019s unconscious or not, that I really need to go in,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n

The rookie lifeguard had been scanning the water from Tower 2 when he spotted the boy after a powerful wave swept him off his feet in ankle-deep water. Williams dropped his gear and sprinted into the rough 8-to-10-foot surf.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenges for this rescue was that it was so close in, fins were ineffective,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The closer he got, the more desperate the situation became.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole time I was thinking, I just need to hold my position until my partner can get here because I\u2019m not going to be able to get him out on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams said he focused on keeping both himself and the boy from being dragged farther into the Pacific.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoing the best I can to get a good grip on the child and not get sucked out any further.\u201d<\/p>\n

As beachgoers rushed into the surf to help, Williams ordered them back to shore.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were bystanders who jumped in to try to help, and I yelled at them all to get back to shore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Another lifeguard soon reached the pair.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy partner mostly takes over holding the child because at this point, my arms were very exhausted from holding on,\u201d Williams recalled. \u201cI still support him as much as I can as we drag him out of the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathaniel\u2019s father, Sumit Rai, has credited Williams\u2019 quick actions with saving his son\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cGratefully, he\u2019s alive. It\u2019s a miracle,\u201d Rai told The California Post. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to that lifeguard, Ryder.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo more seconds he gets thrown another 15-20 feet,\u201d Rai added. \u201cYou can\u2019t see him, let alone rescue him.\u201d<\/p>\n

After reaching shore, Nathaniel coughed up sand and remained in shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy son told me that he drowned and my son told me that he went unconscious,\u201d Rai said. \u201cHe was very subdued, still in a state of shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Williams, though, the dramatic rescue was simply part of the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is just a part of our daily task to do. We can keep the public safe. That\u2019s the reason we were on the beach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rather than calling it a day after the high-stakes rescue, Williams climbed back into his tower.<\/p>\n

\u201cI returned to my tower after the rescue and continued to make safety contacts and ended up making more rescues later that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams also emphasized that saving lives is a team effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether that day, we had many units on and all the tower staff. All the towers are making constant safety contacts with the units driving through to support us. Without working together, we would not be able to make many of the rescues we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The teen hopes the attention surrounding his rescue encourages more beachgoers to learn about the dangers of the ocean before heading into the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish more people knew about ocean conditions and rip currents,\u201d he said. \u201cA way that people can find out about those is talking to the lifeguards or doing some research before they head to the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like people to remember that we make thousands of rescues along the California coast and around the world every day and that this is not an uncommon occurrence. This is our job, this is what we\u2019re here to do, and this is the reason we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the spotlight, Williams said the experience has only reinforced why he became a lifeguard.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe experience has been amazing. It is awesome to get to come out and help people every day. I have learned so much about the beach and being able to help people and what it takes to be a lifeguard.\u201d<\/p>\n
