Modest Mouse has booted guitarist Simon O\u2019Connor from its upcoming North American tour after he was accused of sending inappropriate messages to a teen fan.<\/p>\n

The indie rock band announced Friday that O\u2019Connor, who is in his 40s, will not join them on the road beginning Tuesday in Ojai, Calif.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimon O\u2019Connor will not be joining us on the upcoming tour,\u201d the \u201cFloat On\u201d rockers wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news is that Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav will be jumping in to play guitar. We look forward to being out there with you all.\u201d<\/p>\n

On July 26, O\u2019Connor was accused by a Reddit user, who identified themselves as a 17-year-old fan, of sending them \u201can erotic image\u201d and commenting on their \u201cbikini pics\u201d through Instagram direct message.<\/p>\n

The user, who posted a series of screenshots of their alleged conversations on the social platform, said they were 16 at the time of the interaction and had their date of birth listed in their Instagram profile.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor allegedly opened the conversation with a sticker reading, \u201cSimon calls your bluff, BUZZZ,\u201d before sending what the user described as a sexually explicit meme of a naked man.<\/p>\n

The user responded by suggesting O\u2019Connor\u2019s account had been hacked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWish I was hacked just had a party night and looking at everything with one eye ya know,\u201d O\u2019Connor allegedly replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you did blindside me with a gaggle of likes and then very little intro besides bikini pics so we are both to blame.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor\u2019s message was quickly deleted, but the recipient said they had taken a screenshot.<\/p>\n

The user also alleged O\u2019Connor viewed an Instagram Story counting down to their 17th birthday before later messaging, \u201csorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor responded Monday in a lengthy statement, apologizing to the fan while saying he had mistaken them for someone he believed had repeatedly harassed him online using fake accounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout my adult life, there has been a person who has popped up from time to time with the intention of, for lack of a better term, messing with me,\u201d O\u2019Connor wrote on the Modest Mouse subreddit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI assumed that this was the same person I had dealt with before and, with poor judgement, I decided to reach out with a tasteless meme, a sticker that read \u2018Simon calls your bluff,\u2019 and an attempt to indicate that I recognized the \u2018barrage of likes\u2019 and similar photo content from the previous profiles\u2026. Almost a \u2018gotcha.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a few minutes, I realized that I had made a mistake and this was not the person who I had dealt with before,\u201d he continued. \u201cI unsent the messages and immediately ceased communication.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m genuinely sorry to the person who received those messages,\u201d O\u2019Connor added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t deserve to be put in that position, and I\u2019m sorry for the stress and attention this has brought them. I know some people will choose not to believe me, and I understand that. I can\u2019t change what\u2019s happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can do is tell the truth, take responsibility for my mistake, and apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guitarist also wrote that he \u201cunequivocally\u201d opposes \u201cany sexual behavior towards minors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band did not explain O\u2019Connor\u2019s tour absence or say whether he remains a member in their statement Friday.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor joined Modest Mouse\u2019s touring lineup in 2021 after performing in New York City\u2019s music scene as Simon Doom.<\/p>\n

He also appears on the band\u2019s latest album, \u201cAn Eraser and a Maze,\u201d which was released in June.<\/p>\n

Fronted by Isaac Brock, Modest Mouse has been one of indie rock\u2019s biggest bands since breaking through with the 2004 hit \u201cFloat On\u201d and the platinum-selling album \u201cGood News for People Who Love Bad News.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brock is now the band\u2019s only original member following drummer Jeremiah Green\u2019s death from cancer in 2022 at age 45.<\/p>\n
