The Women\u2019s National Basketball Association may claim to put women first, but the league sure has a funny way of showing it. \u00a0<\/p>\n

When its leaders aren\u2019t giving prodigy Caitlin Clark the cold shoulder or turning a blind eye to her on-court mistreatment, they\u2019re telling young female fans to go dribble a football if they insist that women\u2019s sports should be free of male intrusion.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what happened Wednesday when Celeste Keaton, co-owner of the Seattle Storm, publicly exploded at two teen girls for wearing T-shirts reading XX-XY \u2014 an implicit message that sports should be separated by sex.<\/p>\n

Keaton allegedly called the pair \u201cf\u2013king insane\u201d for their quiet protest at a game between the Storm and the Indiana Fever.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right: This wealthy, influential woman saw two girls seated courtside respectfully advocating to keep women\u2019s sports female \u2014 at a women\u2019s basketball game featuring high-profile female stars, no less \u2014 and thought to herself, \u201cI should berate them for their bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n

The optics were too ridiculous to satirize.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019re in keeping with the kerfuffle that followed last week\u2019s remarks by the Fever\u2019s Sophie Cunningham, who has become a league firebrand for her verbal and even physical defense of Clark, her teammate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cunningham told ESPN that true empathy, widely seen as a core female strength, means not lying to those you love about observable reality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith that love is truth, being honest,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201ctruth\u201d she referenced is that men and women are biologically different down to their DNA, bone structure, muscle mass and other indisputable attributes \u2014 and that trans women are biologically male.<\/p>\n

And that, in truth, gender-inclusion policies have resulted in an invasion of young women\u2019s spaces, opportunities, privacy and safety.<\/p>\n

Under the pretense of compassion, young female athletes across the country have been subjected to an impossible playing field \u2014 and in some cases, voyeurism and sexist attacks.<\/p>\n

Pressed by reporters in the article\u2019s aftermath, Cunningham doubled down.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI said what I said. I think it\u2019s kind of common sense,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

Unlike the senior leaders of her sport, who are choosing cowardice as they kowtow to trans activists, Cunningham is acting like a guardian of the young.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s the big sister in this ugly scenario, looking out for girls\u2019 welfare.<\/p>\n

Her truth-telling is what inspired Keaton\u2019s victims to show up for Wednesday\u2019s game and display their solidarity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No, it\u2019s the matriarchs of the WNBA \u2014 comfortably aged out of the possibility that a man might take their titles and trophies \u2014 who are pulling the rug out from these girls.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve already benefited from a long era of fair competition untainted by gender ideology.<\/p>\n

They lived for years under the paradigm of Title IX (before the Biden administration bastardized it to include gender identity as a protected category).<\/p>\n

But now that the zeitgeist is in favor of the \u201cinsane,\u201d to use Keaton\u2019s word, the elders are damning girls as hateful for not wanting to be forced to compete against gender-confused men with huge physical advantages.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And while some accuse the girls of inventing a problem, they\u2019re not making this up.<\/p>\n

The displacement of young women by mediocre male athletes claiming to be women is documented and widespread.<\/p>\n

Ahnaleigh Wilson, one of the two teenagers involved in Wednesday\u2019s confrontation, literally lost a state track meet title to a transgender-identifying male athlete two years ago.<\/p>\n

You\u2019d think Keaton would have the empathy to listen to Wilson, who has encountered an obstacle that would have been unfathomable to the sports world during Keaton\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n

The WNBA has rightly suspended Keaton for five home games and fined her an undisclosed amount for her inappropriate behavior \u2014 but the episode demonstrated what a joke the league has become.<\/p>\n

When the financial stakeholders of a sport that has for decades lived in the NBA\u2019s better-attended, far more lucrative shadow can\u2019t agree that their players deserve the opportunity to compete with dignity and fairness, they\u2019ve given the game away.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Feminist advocates laid the WNBA\u2019s foundations.<\/p>\n

They insisted upon the importance of a separate league for women, and fought to give women a chance to excel in their own category.<\/p>\n

But the guilt-tripping of a small minority has them throwing away those years of progress for the girls who would follow them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hypocrisy, and self-sabotage, is apparently in the WNBA\u2019s DNA.<\/p>\n
