President Donald Trump is convening his Cabinet this week for what looks to be a \u201creset\u201d \u2014 wisely so, as his agenda has hit a rough patch, with bad polls and big worries about the November elections.<\/p>\n

Team Trump is doing a lot of good, but overshadowing those achievements right now are some ugly optics and confusing-or-worse communications.<\/p>\n

No two ways about it: The Trump Justice Department settlement of the Trump IRS lawsuit looks\u00a0terrible<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A blanket guarantee that the prez and his family will never ever face an IRS audit? A $1.8 billon \u201canti-weaponization fund,\u201d courtesy of the taxpayers, to be doled out to people who claim they were victimized by Biden-era \u201clawfare\u201d \u2014 with no evident need to even show\u00a0evidence?<\/em><\/p>\n

This is on a par with Joe\u2019s final-days blanket pardons for Hunter and the rest of the Biden clan.<\/p>\n

And it landed about the same time the prez disclosed that his personal account has made\u00a03,600\u00a0<\/em>stock trades with total values of $220 million to $750 million while he\u2019s in office.<\/p>\n

His personal fortune has reportedly more than doubled since his second term began, from $2.4 billion to $6.3 billion.<\/p>\n

Add in his sons\u2019 extensive, highly lucrative crypto dealings with Gulf state Arabs and other foreigners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

None of it is a good look, however legal or above board it may in fact be. It comes at a time\u00a0when regular Americans suffer spiking energy prices (and the ensuing economic troubles) caused by the Iran war \u2014 sacrifices that may be worth the gain of permanently defanging the Islamic Republic, but sacrifices nonetheless.<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t help that, as far as almost anyone can tell, the war is stuck in a bizarre Twilight Zone: Now largely paused for much longer than the weeks of actual offensive operations, with no clear sign of just how or when it will end.<\/p>\n

Rises in inflation are outstripping the rise in wages for the first time in years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The result? Last month\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0that more than a quarter of\u00a0Republicans<\/em>\u00a0don\u2019t believe Trump \u201ccares about people like you.\u201d<\/p>\n

And,\u00a0in CBS\/YouGov polling, Republicans\u2019 approval of Trump\u2019s handling of inflation was down to 63%, from 74% in March; among all voters, it fell from a bad 33% to a worse 27%.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Loyal Trump voters think the president is doing great, but should be aware of how this looks.<\/p>\n

We are going backward on inflation, despite the stock market, and while Democrats are crazy, the conflict-of-interest stuff is going to stick, especially if they come away from November with oversight powers.<\/p>\n

All this has Republicans in Congress fracturing, with Senate chief John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson increasingly hard-pressed to move the Trump agenda along.<\/p>\n

We by no means want to put all Team Trump\u2019s troubles down to \u201cpoor communications,\u201d but whatever public message they\u2019re trying to send, and what policies they should rightly be proud of and crowing about, sure isn\u2019t coming through.<\/p>\n

Somebody needs to get on top of this, with an eye not just on the White House speaking directly to the public\u2019s concerns, but on how what it\u2019s\u00a0doing<\/em>\u00a0looks to average Americans.<\/p>\n
