A harrowing new docuseries on Netflix, \u201cThe Idaho Murders: College Nightmare,\u201d is shedding new light on the gruesome 2022 death of four University of Idaho students.<\/p>\n

In November 2022, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were fatally stabbed at an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Years later, on July 2, 2025, former Washington State University criminology student Bryan Kohberger, now 31, pleaded guilty to the crime, and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison. He didn\u2019t say why he committed the horrifying crime.<\/p>\n

A year later, on July 26, 2026, Kohberger claimed in a shocking turn of events that he is innocent and wants to withdraw his guilty plea. The latest twist in the case was not part of the series. <\/p>\n

See below for the biggest bombshells from the three-part docuseries, which is now streaming on Netflix.<\/p>\n

The victims\u2019 friends found out through a campus-wide text alert<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When surviving roommates Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke called the police, she tearfully said, \u201cSomething\u2019s happened in our house and we don\u2019t know what.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funke said in the 911 call that her friends were, \u201cnot waking up\u201d and and \u201cpassed out,\u201d not realizing their friends were dead.<\/p>\n

The responding officers\u2019 bodycam footage shows Mortensen, Funke and other friends \u2014 with their faces blurred out \u2014 sitting on the curb outside the house, as cops investigated the scene.<\/p>\n

One of them tearfully told a cop, \u201cyou could have told us what happened before they sent a text.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the cop replied, \u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d the victims\u2019 friend explained, \u201cthey sent a text [message] to the entire university \u2013 before even telling us what happened.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Blaine Eckles, the Dean of Students at the University of Idaho, explained onscreen that he was \u201cflabbergasted\u201d when the cops told him, \u201cWe have four dead individuals, and we think they may be college students.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added that the protocol for crimes was to use an internal emergency alert system, to \u201cget information out immediately\u201d to everyone\u2019s phones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anthony Dahlinger, chief of the Moscow Police Department, noted that the college didn\u2019t give police a warning before they released the alert, and cops would have preferred if they had \u201ccollaborated.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cooper Atkinson, who was friends with Chapin, recalled that the alert said \u201chomicide,\u201d which was \u201ca heavy word\u201d that made everyone \u201cfreak out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of us knew they weren\u2019t alive anymore, but didn\u2019t know what happened,\u201d he said, adding that the college community was beset by \u201congoing panic, phone calls, texts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kohberger allegedly told his victims he was going to \u2018help\u2019 them\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Surviving roommate Mortensen was home the night of the murders, recalling that she heard a scream, and she heard one of her deceased roommates say, \u201cSomeone\u2019s here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mortensen told police, \u201cI locked my door, because I was so scared.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI remember hearing this guy\u2019s voice that I didn\u2019t recognize saying, \u2018You\u2019re going to be OK. I\u2019m gonna help.\u2019\u201d\u00a0She noted that he didn\u2019t say it in \u201ca nice way,\u201d but rather, \u201cin a weird way. Like, a weird tone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victims friends got nasty messages while they were grieving\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kohberger was arrested over a month after the slayings, on Dec. 30, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the weeks before police took him into custody, social media was abuzz with conspiracy theories about who killed the four students.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Atkinson recalled onscreen that he got messages on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, from people asking what he knew.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were accusations flying left and right. There were just no answers, so people were finding answers themselves,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Atkinson added that it was \u201chard\u201d because they were \u201cprocessing\u201d it, and \u201ctrying to deal with our friends who just got killed \u2013 and also, protect ourselves from the internet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chapin\u2019s friend Peter Elgorriaga said, \u201cI got a few of those messages \u2013 people saying that I\u2019m the killer, I\u2019m gonna get caught. Like, what are you saying?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t have made a difference if someone called the cops sooner\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The murders happened between 4:00 and 4:25 a.m. on Nov. 13, 2022. The surviving roommates didn\u2019t call the cops until nearly eight hours later, close to noon.<\/p>\n

Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee\u2019s mother, recalled that she asked the coroner if the victims could have been saved if someone called 911 sooner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe answer was no,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kacy Johnston, who was friends with Kernodle, said that she \u201cdidn\u2019t blame\u201d the surviving roommates for \u201cmaking the phone call late.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI can only imagine if it were me in either one of their shoes \u2013 I would have never believed what occurred in the house that night,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dahlinger explained that there are \u201cmany reasons\u201d why the victims\u2019 friends didn\u2019t call the police sooner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are in shock, it\u2019s traumatic. I mean, I can\u2019t imagine being of that age, and being able to comprehend that this horrific thing just occurred,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kohberger \u2018adored\u2019 his serial killer class\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Lilly Karaban, who was Kohberger\u2019s classmate when he was studying Criminal Justice at Washington State University, said that she sat next to him in a class called, \u201cMinds of a Serial Killer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember him asking a question about every single topic in that class,\u201d she said, adding that the class would \u201croll their eyes\u201d because he asked so many questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She recalled that Kohberger \u201cadored\u201d that class, and it was like \u201ca switch went off\u201d in him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Karaban remembered seeing Kohberger \u201csitting by himself, not talking to anybody\u201d before class.<\/p>\n

When class began, he was \u201ca different person\u201d and \u201cactively taking notes on everything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI never saw him socialize, I never saw him at any party, any sporting event. He was in his own world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kohberger allegedly asked criminals how they chose their victims\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After Kohberger\u2019s arrest, Alivea, Kaylee\u2019s sister, found a questionnaire that he allegedly posted on Reddit aimed at people who had been incarcerated for crimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the questions were, \u2018why did you choose that victim or target over others?\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another alleged question shown was, \u201cBefore making your move, how did you approach the victim or target?\u201d<\/p>\n

He also allegedly asked people what they were \u201cthinking and feeling\u201d after committing a crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alivea said, \u201cLooking at the questions now, it almost seemed like preparation for the perfect crime.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kohberger was \u2018not well liked\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dahlinger said that after Kohberger was arrested, \u201cWe had many interviews with staff and students at WSU, and learned that he was not particularly well liked by his fellow TAs and students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notes from internal complaints at WSU alleged that Kohberger was \u201cdisrespectful to female instructors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dahlinger said that Kohberger made a lot of female students \u201cuncomfortable,\u201d according to their findings, and \u201chad this aptitude for talking down to females, and being curt and argumentative.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kohberger\u2019s location habits changed after the murders\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the time of the murders, Kohberger was studying criminal justice at WSU, located in Pullman, Washington \u2013 a 15 minute drive from Moscow, Idaho.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When police looked at his cell phone records, they noticed his phone in the area of the victims\u2019 house multiple times and \u201codd hours late at night,\u201d according to Dahlinger.<\/p>\n

He added that after the murders, Kohberger\u2019s phone records showed that he \u201cnever came back to Moscow as he did prior.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staying away from that town was a display of \u201cstarkly different behavior\u201d after the murders, he explained.<\/p>\n

Kohberger had an \u2018abnormal\u2019 lack of data on his devices\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Heather and Jared Barnhart, digital forensics experts who assisted with the investigation, said it was \u201cabnormal\u201d that Kohberger only had 18 contacts on his cell phone.<\/p>\n

He also browsed in \u201cincognito\u201d mode, leaving few traces of his online activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They were still able to find that in the days leading up to his arrest, he did online searches for \u201cfederal wiretapping\u201d and \u201cserial killers,\u201d they alleged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The lack of data on his device shows that he wanted to \u201cremain completely anonymous,\u201d Jared alleged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The morning after the murders, Heather said, he stood, \u201cin what we believe was his bathroom in his apartment and gave a thumbs-up selfie, seeming to go on proudly with his life.\u201d<\/p>\n

She alleged, \u201cI believe he thought he would get away with these murders.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The victims\u2019 parents were unhappy the house was torn down\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On Dec. 28, 2023, the university demolished the house where the students were murdered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jeff Kernodle, Xana\u2019s father said, \u201cThat whole house is evidence, as far as I\u2019m concerned. There are still stains and things that should have been left there until the end of the trial. But, they did it anyway.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kaylee\u2019s mom added that people don\u2019t understand why she wouldn\u2019t want the house destroyed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter didn\u2019t just die in that house, my daughter lived in that house. That was where she took her last breath,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The victims\u2019 families think Kohberger got off too easy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Kohberger entered a guilty plea deal in July 2025 to avoid the death penalty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tami, Kaylee\u2019s aunt, said, \u201cHe got off, in a sense, in our eyes, easy,\u201d because when the judge asked if he committed the crimes, all he had to say was, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not enough,\u201d she said. \u201cThe biggest answer I want is why. Why would you choose these kids, and this house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Jeff agreed, adding, \u201cTell all of us parents why he did it, if he was gonna get the plea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I want is for him to die. Justice would be if the kids came back \u2026 they\u2019re never coming back, but I want him to die,\u201d Kristi said.<\/p>\n

The responding cops had to seek therapy\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dahlinger recalled that when his police department responded to the scene, it was, \u201cabsolutely horrific.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said onscreen, \u201cI know not only myself, but every officer that was involved that day, has had a hard time with that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the course of the case, the Moscow police department got help from the Idaho State Police, and 22 FBI agents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was so outside anything that we had dealt with at the police department,\u201d he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dahlinger said the case affected him \u201cvery strongly\u201d and \u201ccaused me a lot of trauma, to the point where I ended up having to get help and talk to a professional \u2013 which, for law enforcement officers, is a very difficult thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
