Before she was a women\u2019s activist railing against the patriarchy, Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s now-wife callously blamed his female underling for an affair that nearly derailed his career \u2014 according to a bombshell essay penned by his ex-lover Ruby Rippey.<\/p>\n

After the affair exploded into the open in 2007, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who was then dating the former San Francisco mayor, went public with her two cents on the affair that Rippey described in searing detail in a Vanity Fair piece published Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t say this, but\u2026if people did research into the scandal\u2026the woman is the culprit,\u201d Siebel Newsom told the San Francisco Chronicle.<\/p>\n

Rippey \u2014\u00a0who was then named Rippey-Tourk and an aide in Newsom\u2019s office \u2014\u00a0had carried on the affair while struggling with alcohol and cocaine abuse, as recounted in her essay. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen commentary about myself before\u2014speculation, condemnation, the occasional defense. That is not new. What is new is his girlfriend entering the record\u2014someone who came into his life after the affair,\u201d Rippey wrote. <\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t the end of Siebel Newsom\u2019s color commentary about the affair between Newsom and his employee. <\/p>\n

The former Hollywood actress turned feminist filmmaker left comments on the local news site SFist calling herself a \u201cgirl\u2019s girl\u201d who nonetheless branded Rippey \u201cbad news\u201d and appeared to dismiss her powerful husband\u2019s role in the protracted sexual affair, which took place in 2005.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a total woman\u2019s woman, girls girl\u2026what\u2019s your definition of affair?\u2026it was a few nothing incidents when she showed up passed out outside of his door\u2026she is bad news,\u201d Siebel Newsom wrote at the time. <\/p>\n

Newsom was going through \u201ccrises \u2014 divorce, the loss of his mother, the pressures of being mayor, etc. and he was vulnerable and lonely,\u201d his now-wife posted online. <\/p>\n

Siebel Newsom apologized for the comments after blowback. <\/p>\n

However, Rippey described complicated feelings about the public chastisement from Siebel Newsom as, years later, the #MeToo movement called out powerful men who have taken advantage of women.<\/p>\n

The affair began in 2005, when Newsom was separated from his then-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle and Rippey was married to Newsom\u2019s close friend and campaign manager, Alex Tourk. <\/p>\n

Newsom and Rippey locked eyes in a narrow hallway at a July 2005 wedding and the sexual encounters began soon after, the former aide wrote. The affair continued for several months before coming to an end as Rippey entered rehab for substance abuse issues.<\/p>\n

Newsom called it the \u201cstupidest and briefest of affairs\u201d in his memoir, \u201cYoung Man in a Hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rippey wrote in the Vanity Fair essay that she was a grown woman who consented to the affair, but later acknowledged the power dynamic at play. <\/p>\n

\u201cStill, the [#MeToo] reckoning exposed what I had missed: Power does not need to coerce. It only needs to exist,\u201d Rippey wrote. \u201cThe responsibility to hold the line belongs to the one who holds it. That didn\u2019t happen. But I didn\u2019t stumble into the space left open\u2014I saw a possibility and went for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth things are true: I am responsible for what I did. Power does not distribute consequences evenly,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

The essay labeled Kamala Harris, former San Francisco district attorney, a \u201creal girl\u2019s girl\u201d after she reached out to offer Rippey support and advice. <\/p>\n

Harris reportedly advised her to stay silent until she had more distance from the situation, which Rippey considered wise advice in retrospect. <\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Just pause. More time will give you better perspective,\u2019\u201d Harris reportedly said. <\/p>\n
